I would guess the code is using the current URL as the basis for the references in the email. Phil is using a odd http URL that matches what the notifications of his posts contain. The URL is working as DNS gets to the correct server and the Apache setup matches any .audio-talk.co.uk URL. It would fail if he was using Https.

I'm not sure if this is a problem with my laptop, but several times a day I get logged out of Audio Talk, and I cant log back in without clearing the stored cookies.

You need to check the url you are using. Ideally you should use:
https://www.audio-talk.co.uk
Previously you were using some half correct url
