Landrovers...

I may have been misinformed. Back in the day when being authorised to drive Landrovers for work, it was emphasised never to set the handbrake when the vehicle was still moving, even ever so slightly as damage could be caused to the differential. I understood it to be a mechanical lock rather than friction. I could easily have been wrong.

Close - although it's a drum brake, it's not designed to slip, i.e. it's generally ON or OFF, so applying it when moving wouldn't be good for anything or anybody...

The transmission brake is the secondary brake, so do they put the vehicle on the rollers and test the secondary brake efficiency ? That should involve applying the handbrake with the wheels revolving ?

PS. The secondary brake efficiency should be 25% if fitted with single circuit primary brake or 16% if fitted with dual circuit primary brake.

Futile. They pass MOTs, ergo it's not an issue

Just to say: In spite of what the argumentative whingers claimed, ibn Stoffel passed his MOT first time and with no advisories.

Obviously that parking brake is a real issue. Pah!

Also nice that as he is now 30 years old, his insurance came in at a mighty £119.00, including tax and broker's premium.

New indicator & fog light stalk switches.

Really annoying: turning left, the indicator worked and canceled fine. Turning right, as soon as you moved the steering wheel, the indicator cancelled. After 30 years, I guess it's fair wear and tear. It's a sealed unit and simply not worth the trouble to open and attempt a fix - OEM replacements are very cheap.

The fog light stalk switch had just corroded and had become unreliable, so new one of those too whilst I had the steering column in bits.

Took the opportunity to also mark the steering column and steering wheel alignment so taking off and replacing the steering wheel is always in the correct place. Copper grease on the spline to make it easier to get off next time.

EDIT: Having dismantled everything and changed the switches (you have to take the instrument binnacle off too), then reassembling it all...

The bleeding new fog light switch is faulty. British engineering quality at its best. Sod it.
