Agreed Nick, but as far as crossovers are concerned (I can't comment on anything else) the transfer functions are my first stage for assessement. If they are affected, it's a problem, simple-as. If they aren't, it may, or may not be a problem, so I go down the check-list as appropriate. Ideal would be not to have the potential problem in the first place, so hopefully Colin can change his order to the aluminium. If not, we just have to deal with it. In this case (for example) there are two air cores, both quite small and they should be spaced reasonably away from the chassis; worth measuring though.

In that case I would mount them sideways so the flux lines through the hole are not aiming at the top or bottom plate.

I have to confess in my last post I was mainly referring to iron cored mains and OPT's, not XO's :oops:

Aluminium chassis' have arrived so now I can start to plan putting the XO boards into them.
First though I need to spray paint them black, a job I hadn't originally planned for.

Might be worth asking at a place that does car body work - they have the right gear, and I've heard they'll do small jobs like that for a fairly low price.

Agreed Chris.

This was an option I was considering as I have used a local garage before who specialise in classic car restorations and who have full spray booth facilities. However, when I unpacked the chassis they are rather crudely made and paint spraying them wouldn't really improve them any. My bad for buying cheap metal chassis cases. I have decided to cover the entire chassis' with some 4mm plywood as I have this in stock. I will then cover the ply with the oak flexi-veneer leftover from the speaker build.

I thought by buying ready available metal chassis would save me the effort of having to make bespoke wooden cases. Seems in this instance buying the relatively cheap Hammond metal chassis was a bad move. Any future builds, should anyone want me to build them a bespoke pair these speakers, will have quality cases with 6mm front aluminium panel, similar to the AN cases I posted earlier. Either that or the 'client' can opt for having the XO'ers installed inside the speaker cabinet.

...internal XOs usually my favourite option from the convenience side. Granted, not necessarily for the poor soul building them. ;) Humour aside, bad luck Colin, sorry to hear the cases aren't up to scratch.

Still frighteningly good speakers though, even if I say it as shouldn't.

Lovely build Colin, if my Sr's are anything to go by I imagine they sound really good!

Find myself wondering how the new tweeters into my SRs with any needed XO mods would sound?

Nick many thanks for the suggestion. I had forgotten about those guys.

To be honest your posting has just reminded me you recommended this company in the past and subsequently Scott and I did use Lincoln Binns for some bespoke laser etched printed binding posts. They are certainly on my list for future consideration and I have now added that link to my favourites for future reference. Ta muchly :thumbup:

Probably a step back from what you currently have.

Thing is, a multiway loudspeaker is about more than achieving a given response curve, electrical & acoustic transfer functions. An SR would need a brand new filter simply to achieve those with the different tweeter. That in itself can be done. However: while the midbass drivers in the SR are high quality units that punch well above their weight (both Colin and I would pick them over a lot of more expensive drivers. In fact: we did), the beryllium tweeter used in the GTs is several magnitudes beyond them in performance terms. The ring-dome used in the SR, which is exceptional in outright terms & one of the best soft domes available, is also at the limit of what those midbass units can be successfully partnered with. Even with the low crossover frequencies I've used, the qualitative difference between the SR's midbass drivers and the beryllium tweeter would be obvious, which is why the GTs use the different midbass units: other than the driver configuration, they're basically a different speaker.

Managed to complete the makeover job on one of the XO boxes. Phew, what a lot of work this has turned out to be. Big lesson learned by me to buy quality cases in future :cry:

Sounds like a similar job to me boxing-up those crossovers - but you did it about 10 times quicker!

That's a heck of a transformation from that dodgy bit of bent aluminium. Looks great now, but I know how much work you've had to put into making them that way...

Being able to turn around jobs relatively quickly is perhaps one of the few benefits of being a retired O.A.P. and having more spare time on ones hands.
