Got a good ride planned with a work colleague for today, we're getting the teian from Taunton to Westbury (Wiltshire) then riding back - a fairly lumpy 100Km or so. Weather forecast is 'scorchio' but at least we'll have a gentle tailwind.

I've a new bike project and started the assembly over the weekend. It's based on a 3T Strada frame that I bought used, but in immaculate condition. It's a carbon aero frame and is specifically designed for 1x drivetrain so just a single chainring (44T) and no front derailleur - to provide the range of gears I have an 11speed cassette, 11-34T. So far it's equipped with 42mm deep carbon wheels and aero carbon handlebars - installing the internal (infernal) brake and gear cabling in the bars was really difficult. I'm waiting for a new bottom bracket so I can finish installing the drivetrain then the bit I'm really not looking forward to, installing and commissioning the hydraulic disc brakes.

That's a saucy looking frame Ray, I've not seen one where the rear wheel is contoured into the seat post like that before.

It's to make the air flow over the back wheel more smoothly Dave, the whole frame has been designed to optimise airflow over 28mm wide tyres in that respect, the downtube does the same for the front wheel. Without the double chainring and front derailleur the bottom bracket area is really clean too. The geometry of the frame is pretty conventional in spite of how it looks, although the seat tube contours arount the wheel the top section is much more 'upright' so if you draw an imaginary line from the bottom bracket to the top of the seat post it'll be like a normal frame. By repute it is a comfortable frame to ride over distance and not extreme like a time trial or triathlon bike and the fatter 28mm tyres will give some compliance whilst still being fast - science has shown that very narrow tyres aren't the best for speed and the pro-peleton has generally moved to 25/28mm tyres.

It's a Selle Italia Flite Flow with Titanium rails. I selected it because I'm setting up the new bike with a slightly more aero riding position by having the bars a little lower and further forward compared to my normal riding position (the odd Cm or so) and the dropped front of this saddle, along with using shorter cranks, will help to rotate my hips forward without discomfort (hopefully!).

I've also managed to land a bargain for some carbon fibre cranks.
On that score I've been finalising my gearing as the bike is going to be a 1x (single chain ring) build and I will need to buy a chainring to go with the CF cranks. I'm going with a 44T chainring and an 11-34 11speed cassette, which will give me a lowest gear similar to my current roadbikes so good for climbing; top gear will be a bit lower than those bikes but it's rare that I use their 11 or 12 tooth cassette cogs and 44x11 will still give me a speed of almost 30mph if I maintain a cadence of 90rpm (I won't!).
A downside of a 1x setup is the slightly larger jumps between gears but you do truly get 11gears because their is no overlap like on a 2X setup.
The other thing I've been contemplating, because the plan now is to use the CF cranks from a 2X setup with just a single front ring installed, is chainline. The 44T front ring I'm buying has a 2mm inward offset, the offset should position the teeth of the front ring between the location of the rings on a 2x setup.
With the 1x setup there is no front derailleur cage to help keep the chain on the ring but equally there is no need for the chainring teeth to be shaped to make shifting between rings smooth so the 1x specific front ring has taller teeth and they're alternatively wide and narrow to grip the chain better so the chances of dropping it are minimised. Further help in this department is provided by a clutch-equipped rear derailleur, which maintains better chain tension over bumps - the technology comes from mountain bikes but is becoming more common on 'road' derailleurs with the emergence of gravel bikes and I'll be using a clutch equpped Shimano Ultegra rear derailleur.
