#1 Buy the record get free download!

Post by simon »

Not sure where the best place to put this is - it could have gone under CD or Fave Artist as well I guess, but I bought the record so I'll stick it here.

I've just got a copy of Jack Johnson's new album Sleep Through The Static on double vinyl. They're not particularly heavy, and the first disc is a little warped but plays okay. But what's really interesting is that there was a code enclosed for a one-time-only download of the album on mp3. Okay it's not flac but at least it's 192kbps.

This is the first time I've come a cross this and I reckon this is a really good move - I'm prepared to pay the premium for an album on vinyl but it sticks in the claw to either have to buy the cd or sample the album to have a digital copy too. Can't see it catching on though unfortunately.

It looks to be done as part of the record pressing company's services:

Interesting idea, makes good sense, but I expect for that reason it won't catch on :-)

Yeah, I can't help thinking that most record companies think that there's an opportunity to sell both the vinyl and cd. Kerching!
