#1 Nick Drake 2007 3 LP set 'Fruit Tree'.

Post by Dave the bass »

Does anyone here own it, the 2007 edition that is? What's the sound quality like? Various ND forums saying it's not all that but I don't know the history of their TT set up's.

It costs a fair whack (£45-ish ) but I'd like to know if it's any good soundwise before parting with the readies.

Fanks yoos,

I'd be cautious Dave - most current vinyl is not analogue , unless from a couple of very good reissuers - Classic and Sundazed for example .
You may get an original 70's 'Fruit Tree' from a dealer for not much more - I paid about £55 or £60 for mine . EBay prices may be over the top for N.D.

There's reports of the 2007 copy being noisy  There was a 1980's reissue of it too that came bundled with 4 extra tracks, the last he recorded I think, that was on Hannibal Records I think.

I've got a Danny Thompson LP on that label, sounds nice.

I'll keep 'em peeled, cheers Mark.
EDIT. Is the Simply Vinyl version of Bryter Layter any cop?

Hi Fi World did something about Fruit Tree in one of their most recent editions.

The current vinyl reissue is done from the CD remaster.
Read into that whatever you will.

Yep, I was also a bit wary that the person who looks after ND's estate mentioned that it wasn't an 'audiophile' release, Hmmm.

I've just bought a Simply Vinyl copy of Bryter Layter for the princley sum of £7.30 to get me going.

Perhaps worth tacking on to this thread :
http://www.philsbook.com/nick-drake.htm

- Some nice info on the 'Sound Techniques' studio and the details of Nick Drake's recordings . I still think John Wood's work at that studio is amongst the very best of all recordings I have on LP .

Useless information.

I've got a version, ANDSP3100, the box is dated 1979, but there is a 4th record Time of no Reply, 14 tracks, which is dated 1986.
Either just the packaging, or all of it was made in Italy for Island.
It's always sounded OK to me, I'll check tonight.
They are average records, bit of vinyl noise some sibilance, but generally OK.
