#1 Anti spyware ?
Hi-i currently use the free AVG for my anti-virus protection and a free program called AdAware for my spy removal.
AdAware is good but wont prevent the little bastards getting in,just cleans them up afterwards.
I was thinking of going to the paid for version of AVG as it incorporates a spyware blocker,or the paid for version of AdAware which will also stop them entering.
I'm so fed up of all the penis enlargement and viagra e-mails i keep getting every day and each time i "cleanse" the "spies" i find 30-40 of them.
Any suggestions ?

I guess the first question is what browser and email clients are you using?
I am not sure how any of the things you mention will stop spam emails though

i find this guy really good:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/how-to- ... our-pc.php
i use a program called sandboxie which allows you to open your web browser inside a "sandbox" or partician inside your computer. afterwards you can just delete its contents which will include any nasties
also avg do an anti spyware program which picks up more nasties than adaware
as nick says junk e mail is another issue. to solve this i think you need to look at an e mail sevice with a decent spam filter. some junk e mail you can stop by clicking on the unsubscribe option on it. others not

Yikes!!! , all my spam etc cleared up when I got Virginned.
You need to alter your settings (like switch it on!!! ) in that huge chunk of software they give you that should come on automatically as you boot up.
I no longer have a big penis nor large mammalian protruberances!!!

Yes.
In all seriousness, I use a combination of Ad-Aware, SpyBot and Symantec Corporate AV on my lone Windows machine. Get your PC behind a router with NAT (preferably with a built in SPI firewall), use the XP firewall too (not brilliant, but adequate) and ensure that your web-browsers and e-mail clients are correctly configured. Thunderbird or Outlook are good alternatives to Outlook Express. Firefox or Opera are necessary alternatives to Internet Exploder.
HTH.

Personally I think it is worth buying some software that provides you with total maintainance free security. You load up and forget until of course, licence renewal is due and then it is probably better to buy the latest version. Luckily for me, this time comes just before Christmas and at that time many software packages are on offer. There is no such thing as a free lunch (cliche) etc and I'm convinced for problem free operation, paying for it works. Having said that, sometimes the package sold over the passage of time does not work well, hense I ditched the 2007 version of Norton because they misdesigned causing the system to become slower and slower. Their 2006 was fine.
I now use http://www.kaspersky.com/
The best I've ever had. Operates in the background all the time. No need for regular full system scans once an initial one has been done. Since November has not let anything at all through with absolutely no maintainance and currently available for about £26 for three computers seems a good deal to me.
My general observation is that those who sign up to free software are always fiddling to a certain degree. I just don't need to do that.
Best wishes,
Greg
