I am going to order some cartridge tags, and I noticed the e-bay supplier also does 401 platter damping rings for £4.99 a pair.
It's been a while since these were mentioned, so what is the current view on them ?

I made some from o-ring string which is what the ones being sold on ebay are I believe, I don't think that there is a massive difference to the sound TBO but they do make the platter ring less if tapped but I do think that you can go too far with damping and it can suck the life out of the music if your not carefull.
Although I haven't done it on the 401 I found that sticking the platter mat down on my lenco g99 worked wonders for the sound.

Seconded - and I still have some of the rubber left.
You only need to cut to size and use superglue and bingo! you have HiTEkHiFiplatter ring.

I'm not convinced by nitrile.....I had some, it was great for 6 months but it stretched and became loose. OK you can cut it and re-glue but it's a hassle. I'm not sure what the proper rubber ones are called but Vic at Trans-Fi has some, they don't need glueing either.

i found big fat elastic bands were more effective than o-rings in damping the ringing
don't look very attractive though !
the outer part of the platter seems to ring more than the inner part (bit like one of those singing bowls)
i think this is why rings and elastic bands have more effect than sticking blue tack or similar on the bottom of the platter. tho the blue tack does make a difference.
vic has designed the ringing out with a solid platter driven on the outside:

anyone heard one of these yet ?

I have a Salvation, I'm a beta tester. I also have a 301 in a twin tier slate plinth. The 301 is relegated to be my second deck, the difference is significant.richardcooper2k wrote: vic has designed the ringing out with a solid platter driven on the outside:

Hi all, I can certainly recommend the platter rings. I use two on my 401, along with a cork mat. They certainly make a significant difference. Much cleaner high frequencies with less smearing.
