Just revisiting some Carla Bley and Steve Swallow CD's for a fellow forum member here and I thought I'd have a look around youtube for some fun.

Found this. Fun and a nice solo.

Now then, that revisiting these 2 takes me back to summat Nick said about Zappa, in that no matter what Zappa does, he always sounds like Zappa. Same here with Steve swallow, I've never heard another bassist that sounds like Mr Swallow. A very unique and melodic soloist on the bass.

Yes! he is :-) See how he plays bass with a pick, very very close to the end of the neck to get a very warm rounded tone. he uses basses with piezo pick ups in to get the wood tone into his sound. He used to play Acoustic Bass but switched to lekky bass in the early 70's but wanted to keep part of that deep wood sound. Almost a polar opposite of Jaco P's sound.

You can't be very unique, quite unique, almost unique, fairly unique or any other sort of unique.

You is unique, or you is not. 8)

Yes, but two things can be different, yet similar, or two things can be different and not at all similar. All four things can each be unique, but two of the things are less unique.

But if you think about it, the simple definition of unique is meaningless, if you look close enough, you will find everything is different from everything else, so in that way everything is unique.

Its all about tolerance I guess.

No.

You may be glad to know that I'm unique, but then so is everyone else.

or to put it another way, find me two things that are not each unique.

I understand what you are trying to convey.

If there was a hopper full of 1 million seemingly identical ball bearings then convention would be that although each one may be, in some infinitesimal way, different to each and every other one, it would not be unique.

Or would it ?

And if it were, it would be unique and not nearly unique.

Ah, but now you are appealing to convention, before you were suggesting that unique was a absolute.
And if it were, it would be unique and not nearly unique.
And now back to the absolute again.

You can't have it both ways. Either uniqueness is a binary property (two things are either unique or they are identical), or its a spectrum, more or less unique. if you want it to be either yes or no, then given that no two things are exactly identical, then everything is unique. So as everything is unique, uniqueness is a property that everything has in equal amount and so entirely meaningless.

Unique: Adjective: Being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else:

So either it is or it isn't. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Every object in he universe is unique, but no object can be more or less unique than any other (with the possible exception of some sub-atomic particles, which I understand can exist at the same time in two different places, but I don't understand that!)

In a sense, the word is self-defeating. If everything is unique, there's not a lot of point in saying so.

^^^ Doh! It appears that I've broken the Audio-Talk forum :)
