#1 Yamaha DD Turntable

Post by pre65 »

Hi-i will soon be the new owner of an American spec (120V) Yamaha DD turntable model YP-D7 at very little cost !

Dave the Bodger (sorry i meant Bass) has offered me a 240-120 transformer so it should be in working order (i hope) before very long.

Is anything known about this model ?

Most of the google results are in foreign languages.

TX sent First Class at about 3PM from central Lundun (Village), should be with you Monday I'd guess.

Re- Your TT... I think they were one better the YP-D6 but two worse than the YP-D9.

Does that help? :D

Hi Dave-now i've got it home it seems to be a Japanese home model cos it says the power input is 100V !!!!

So,how do i calculate what resistor i need to drop 115V (122V unloaded) to 100V,and is that a good idea ?

You can't work out what resistor until you know what current it draws.

Whats the TX you are getting off Dave?

You should be able to use a 115+115:9+9 torroid wired as a autoformer to get near 100v.

Simple solution is to get a variac

Hi-the transformer is 230-115V and Dave measured 122V without a load applied.

The label on the rear of the turntable says 100v 5W.

did it come from the states at some stage having been sold there new?
if so does that mean it'll run at 120v

The TX I've sent Philip is a 240/115V step down TV, it's rated t 115V AC @ 80VA.

It's nuffink special but should be OK for the job.

Hi Dave-the transformer came this morning, thanks for that matey.

I measured the output unloaded at 118 V.

Now being FIK i thought i would try to reduce the voltage by inserting a resistor in each of the output wires and see if i could get it down a bit !

Now it seems to have only acted on making a load for the output, because with two 100K power resistors per wire the transformer is outputting a constant 115 V.

Isnt elecktrickery complicated ?

Hi David-the previous owner received the deck sans mains lead and had never used it so i don't know.

It only cost me £20 but even so i dont want to damage anything.

The extra 15 volts might not make much difference ??? (the power supply i have now is 115 V)

You only need to do it in one wire. I didn't suggest you couldn't do that, but without knowing the load you can't say what value will be needed.

I guess its just adding resistors into a supply seems a tad inefficient, what I was suggesting was using a toroid as a autoformer, something like this with a 115+115:18+18 80va one

Your step ups arrived also, and temp C3g,

Cheers Phil, just waiting on the tortoise TX from the US and DHTski will be kicking, I've bought him home again anticipating the arrival.

Hi-the turntable works on 100v via the variac !

I have seen a frame transformer with two 50v secondarys so i might invest in one of them when the time comes for a permanent power supply.

Hi-tonight i have been reunited with my DL103 !

I hate "fiddling" with cartridges and their tiny fixing screws but decided i must, and now the 103 is sitting in the Yamaha headshell with the obligatory 20p blutacked to the top.

I like what i hear and it is "better" than the Goldring 1012 that i have been using recently. Not night and day but generally an improvement.
