I've been looking at a JVC QL-7,
it's a direct drive unit which will need putting in a plinth, looks a bit like a flying saucer :)

does anybody have any experience of them

thanks
David

That would look exquisite in the right plinth

But how do they sound?

Hi David-depends on the price !

My £20 Yamaha DD is to my liking. :D

I read somewhere it was similar to (or even made by) a Denon deck, although there were lots of different DD Denons.

Are you able to collect if you purchase ? (is it in UK)

Denon made a range of similar units but don't know if they're the same though,

trouble is it's not in the UK so I'm buying it blind,

David

I have one of these in the original plinth with an SME 3009.
Very good.
Plater is quite light and rings a bit. I found it worked better with a Funk Anachormat than the original rubber one.
Plinth in the original was veneered chip board.

Any further help, just ask. Probably best to have a telco.
Regards

I have one of those too :D They are a very musical little deck. I have the QL-7A with a Japanese arm - it works well with meduim compliance cartridges.

The motor unit you have is a TT-71, the QL-7 was the motor unit mounted on a plinth. The TT-71 is the baby of the series and is relatively light weight. The TT-81 is heavier and sounds it. The TT-101 is a fabulous unit that leaves 99.9% of DD turntables behind when properly mounted.

THE Denons are quite different sounding with the DD-80 and DD100 being the outstanding units but they are very good from the DD-56 on.

thanks James,
the idea is to mount it in a CLD plinth and to start with I'm going use my SME M2-9,

sadly it looks like the 8s and the 10s are very much rarer than the 7

I've got my eye on a QL-A7 as well :o
