#1 Direct Drive turntable

Unread post by Daniel Quinn »

After having a pink and then a lenco , the time has arrived for a direct drive .

I need a quartz locked , automatic to cope with my disability meeting old age . I figure , one hand and a wobbly gait will be more consequential as I get older and vinyl is a young man's game

A detachable headshell will also help me change cartridge etc.

So , what are your suggestions up to £1000 . Anything you had or heard and was of the opinion that it was goodv

My acrylic PTP lenco is fabulous , so I need it to be as good .

The cartridge will always be an audio technica 33atp ii

Good luck in your quest. :)

I have a Yamaha YP-D7 but it does not meet your specifications.

Greg has (so I believe) a nice Denon DD turntable, but I don't know the model.

Quartzlock and fully automatic, jvc ql-y3f and ql-y5f, and denon dp47. I wouldnt mind a dp47 myself, but i have nothing set up, havent had for 6 months. Maybe at some point. I have a y3 and a y5, not a lot between them but i like the 5 a bit better

Consider a Technics SL-7 or others in the range. Very good sounding decks and I think the 6 and 10 allow individual track selection. As close to a CD player as vinyl gets.

If I were buying a turntable I'd not let it anywhere near the average UK courier service.

These turntables are difficult to get hold of. They all seem to be located in Japan.

Found a Sony in Germany . How come postage from Germany is £126 , yet free from Japan ! Bloody Brexit .

Settled on the Sony . Arrives end of the month .

Hi Daniel
I am speaking from experience as I have imported quite a Few TT's without a Plinth or Tonearm, I have imported a couple with a Plinth and Tonearm, but the Tonearms being SME V's were of no Value to me
I am advising with the intent to avoid unwanted occurrences in transit that the Packing Service preparing for shipping are asked to detach the Platter and wrap it separately, keeping it in the same Package for the TT.
I usually ask that the Platter is under the TT in the Transit Packaging.
Note: I have had Platter Spindles Sheared Off at the entry to the Bearing Housing when the TT is shipped with the Platter in place.
As you have a Tonearm that is very important to the TT's function and probably much better than the SME V .
I would ask for the Tonearm to be wrapped in Bubble Wrap or a Foam Material to make a Large Bumper, this can then be taped down as an attempt to prevent movement during transit, if does free up, the Bumper will prevent movement that can cause issues not wanted.

Check the Insurance Conditions as Well, I have had disputes, but eventually won the bulk of the Purchase Value on a TT and another occasion a Tonearm that looked quite different to the Images seen in the Advert.

Note: In Japan on the Sales Portal, if it as advertised as Junk Item, this is the Loophole to avoid return items, this also makes the Insurance difficult if needed to be used. The argument becomes, why was there a charge for the item to be insured, if the Sales Ad has voided the Insurance need. It is unlikely the item is Junk, but definitely well aged.

There’s a ex Richard Dunn Pioneer PL-71 for sale on Hi-Fi Subjectivist.
