#1 Any recommendations?
Hi all,
I’ve been enjoying my basic hi-fi system for a while, but I’m thinking it’s time for an upgrade. I mostly listen to rock and jazz, and I’m on a moderate budget — around £500-£700.
I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options out there. Would you recommend focusing on better speakers first, or should I invest more in an amplifier or DAC? Also, are there any specific brands or models that are known for good value in this range?
Thanks in advance for any advice or personal experiences you can share!

Hi, and welcome.
It may help if you can list your current system.

Are you seeking commercial kit recommendations or planning on dipping your toe into DIY audio?
Sorry, I couldn't resist!

I don't recommend anyone clicking the link in the OP's post but I wonder if they're not really that interested in audio.

He obviously wants someone to listen with him. Perhaps I was wrong when I said hifi is a solipstic hobby
Ps. Saying "I wouldn't click on the link" and not explaining why ! Are you assisting ?

I wouldn't click on any link from an unknown source.
Is he a genuine audio enthusiast ? His user name might suggest so, but I'll reserve judgement till he's posted a bit more.

That was in response to DQ Phil. I'd already suggested people might not want to click on the link.
As some don't seem to be able to do nuance it's a link to escorts, and not of the Ford variety. I don't think anyone genuinely interested in audio is going to include a link like this. But each to their own.

I have removed the link, I doubt he is a real user, but one more chance.
I think the main reason why Europeans no longer want to travel to the USA is the big time difference. For me, it's now 7pm. In the USA it's now 1933.

Just curious Nick, does the forum software record how many times the link's been clicked?

No, the clicking happens in your browser.

That made me happy in a dark time. My own response in my head was not click any link, and to the question posed, can of worms, so shan't give any advice. Maybe I should have said Buy one of Morgan Jones’ books first.Nick wrote: Fri May 16, 2025 9:05 am I have removed the link, I doubt he is a real user, but one more chance.
Unrelated but I was suspicious of a link that appeared to come from Gas Safe, so I rang them and said, this link you sent me can you please send it in a letter if it is important. They said “what link” . I was talking to real people, first the person who answers the phone then a gas safe inspector. and a dual coversation with both of those at the same time trying to figure out what had happened. I was asured gassafe had no issues with me and would not have told me if they had with a link to open. Just to be absolutely sure they involved their IT person, who said “tell him not to click on the link!”.
Bullet swerved.
