#1 Wood pellet stove.

Post by pre65 »

In the new year (next week) I will be looking to visit local specialists to enquire about a wood pellet stove to replace the wood burner in my living room.

I think a small one, about 4Kw max should be enough.

In the meantime, anyone got any experiences to share ?

10% more efficiency than a log burner... fuel 100% more expensive, subsidies run out for making wood pellets soon I think. Know someone who runs a wood chip boiler for his swimming pool, it was free fuel until the biomass power stations, started to pay for chippings off the tree surgeons around us.

I wouldn't bother for the reasons mentioned. I do some tree surgery amongst other things which supplements what I get from my six acres of woodland. If it wasn't for "free" wood I wouldn't even bother with a log burner. Saying that with gas and electricity prices the way they are then things are not so clear cut.

Forgot to say, you can't use tree surgeon's chipped waste. Once it is chipped and put on a pile it starts to heat up and compost very quickly unless it was dead wood. The result is one large mass which won't flow for self feeding boilers. Waste of time trying.

Still looking into pellet stoves. One local dealer has closed, and another one gave me a catalogue.

My oil fired central heating boiler has been playing up recently. This afternoon it died.

The engineer cam round and stripped it down, and hopefully will be back in the morning with some spare parts.

I've got the wood burner going now, so at least we have one warm room. :D

New parts did not cure problem. :(

After much thinking and checking it seems the fuel pump is the problem. The pin that connects the input shaft to the small gear has worn and the gear is not turning.

He's gone to get a new pump, so hopefully it will be up and running soon.

Very few parts in oil boilers, unless it’s got back end rot I’m sure it’ll be much more economic than a pellet burner. Keep it going, I usually adjust the fan for lower co2 more excess air as it keeps them clean between services, less soot on youre washing and the neighbours cars. Oil boilers that is.

The pellet stove will be to replace the wood burner in the living room.

Anyway, all is well with the oil boiler now, and I've removed my fleece jacket and woolly hat as the inside temperature has got up to near normal. :D

My pellet stove searching is getting tiresome.

Does anyone know a pellet stove supplier (in the UK) who actually keeps them in stock ?

I am prepared to travel.

We had a 14 week wait for our 2nd log burner if that's any consultation,
The tube manual is quite like a telephone book. The number of it perfect. It is useful to make it possible to speak with a girl. But we can't see her beautiful face from the telephone number

It looks straightforward enough to burn pellets in your wood burner Phil

Or you could easily build or buy? a convertor kit or hopper for some stoves

I've not used them but this place has a good reputation down this end of the country...

Thanks Ray.

I looked at the web site but there is no mention of pellet stoves, or pellet fuel.

I've found an advert on Gumtree for a Norfolk based supplier, I've Emailed him my contact details.

Sorry Phil, I didn't look that closely, just assumed they would...

I know the owners of a local estate who have a large pellet boiler. The pellets they use are imported from Germany FFS. Has nobody heard of climate change? This method of heating is viewed as relatively green but how can it be when the fuel is doing so many miles to reach point of use.
