Well done Dave.

Have any of you cyclists any comments about modern hub gears, particularly the continuously variable type ?

The good ones are well-sorted and relaible Phil - I'm seriously thinking about a new 'commuter' bike and hub gears will be on the list of required features as you don't need to fuss about maintenance too much, especially in winter conditions.

The best ones are Rohloff

https://www.rohloff.de/en/

but I'll probably go with Shimano Nexus, similar maintenance advantages - fewer ratios but at a lower cost is the compromise and fine for what I'll be looking to use it for.

I've not looked at budget offerings - I guess there must be some out there - as I wouldn't want to buy something that might be compromised quality wise as these hubs are complex mechanisms.

have you seen any of the Seat Mo scooters on the road yet?
looks absolutely brilliant from the specs but I can't work out why they charge 6000+ euros for it when a compatible petrol scooter is £2000 or thereabouts.....

How do they fix the price for such things? ....recoup R&D?...stick there finger in the air and hope?....ride on the back of the 'save the planet movement'?

Nope, not seen a Seat lekky scooter yet but I have seen a few other road legal types. A couple of Zero lekky motorcycles too occasionally. Incredibly fast and incredibly silent.

Most of the escooters in london are the illegal to ride on footpath or road type, no helmet, tax, insurance or need to stop at traffic lights or road junctions it appears! I've never seen any rider/ pilot pulled over yet by the police.

Just been out for an hour & 15 in the valley. Conditions beautiful, I love a bright February day. Didn't need the gloves... crazy. Nice conclusion to a week off that worked out really well for weather.

I didn't know there were any continuously variable ones - don't tell me they are made by DAF ? !
I am aware of 7 and 11-speed ones from Shimano and 14 from Rohloff ( as Ray says ) at perhaps >£1000 if you like that sort of thing.

I missed the best of the daylight today so had to head back into the garage for a Zwift ride - I chose a good hard mountain climb to round off the month:-

The top ramp on the climb averages around 14-15%, topping out at more than 17% - a real sting in the tail!

My stats for February are:-

Distance: 881Km (547miles)

Elevation: 9759metres (32,017ft)

Good point, my chopper must have made a big impression on you... sniggers.

That was a 2 speed SA with a T shift . It had 1st and 3rd gear only. 2nd was 'slip', superb for removing front teeth at 11 years of age I found .

For a while in the mid 1980's I used a 3-speed Sturmey with 2 sprockets , and a single front ring. I was quite light ( & student) then, and it was nice riding past a proper club rider on a hill, with the 'tick tick tick' of the Sturmey going. I also took that bike up for my second round-Northern-Scotland tour in '86. It was well suited to the vicious coastal roads on the West side, since you could change up or down about three-quarters of the gear range in one quick flick of the Sturmey lever on the handlebars.

Don't talk to me about Turkey Archer, I'm not even going to correct the spelling. I have scars.....

Anna's appalling Dutch bike has Shimano hub breaks and they are superb. The test of the bike is outrageously bad in every way.

Sturmeys were fine if you adjusted them correctly to avoid the 'neutral'. If you didn't , certainly you could get a nasty scrungement.
When I was about 16, i took one apart to understand how it worked, then put it back together. It was nicely made inside and hardly worn, for a bike that was 20 years old.
