I imagine a lot is dependant on whatever the recycling provider in the area does - I doubt it's the local authorities themselves. Which is presumably why recycling policy is different from council to council.

Those enormous wheelie bins are an absolute eyesore that blight once pleasant streets up and down the land and to a significant extent they address the symptom not the disease. Fortunately, because our house is on a slope with no means of getting one of the monstrosities in or out of the property I'm still allowed to put out black bags for non recyclable waste (upto four a fortnight, though we never do), a very small container for food waste (which we only ever partially fill) and two small plastic crates for recyclable stuff.

I'm doing a lot of imagining today but I imagine the proliferation of wheelie bins is to cut down on sorting. Less sorting means lower costs means lower council tax I guess.

The Spanish model is interesting - large bins on street corners the residents use. Non individual collection AFAIK.

I spent a lot of time watching the Spanish binnie boys collecting the rubbish from those bins. I was in awe. More truthfully, it's one man and a wagon that has super techy capabilities. The chap drives the wagon alonside the bins and a robotic arm appears and upends the bin into the correct mouth of the wagon...

one man, one wagon, loads of streets

Interestingly or maybe oddly when I was travelling in the Yemen, the city of Aden had one rubbish truck, bought by the Japanese ,( out of pity?) I don't remember any at all in Saana. It was the most full country I've ever seen of rubbish almost everywhere.

I too have watched the Spanish.

Remember the sonic-boom that we experienced down here in the South West a couple of weeks back.

One of the teams I work with are astronomers/mathematicians (providing information for celestial navigation, primarily as a back-up for a GNSS failure/spoofing/blocking. That's interesting in its own right, especially when you consider the implications for future autonomously navigated vessels and how you might provide backup/resilience.

Anyway, they provided a general interest briefing to the wider team on the recent sonic boom event. Some factoids that I picked up:

Meteors and meteorites aren't the same thing. Meteors are things that enter the Earth's atmosphere from space, meteorites are meteors that reach the Earth's surface.

The average meteor is around the size of a pea and few are meteorites. The sonic boom was caused by a meteorite likely to have been about the size of a football/basketball and is likely to be somewhere at the bottom of the Bristol Channel.

I guess some of you are aware of this stuff but to me, as a layman with this sort of stuff, it was fascinating.

'cept the topic is very niche for an April Fool piece - what proportion of the BBC's audience would even be interested, let alone be able to 'get it''?

Anyway, in a related way, it would be the sixth force of nature; the fifth being the mysterious one that enables people to believe in things like QAnon, Flat Earth, etc. in spite of an absence of any evidence for the former and the overwhelming evidence against it for the latter.

It may be better not to stray into discussions involving religion, and religious beliefs. ?
