#1 Net Nanny

Post by The Stratmangler »

Hi All

Anyone got experience of blocking programmes such as Net-Nanny ?
Son and heir managed to find himself viewing porn t'other day, and I'm not amused, as he's not yet seven.

Input would very much be appreciated.

Hi Chris.

I've never used any of these programs.
Instead i explained the consequences of viewing such web sites to the kids.
I think its quite normal for youngsters to want to look at this garbage, but i agree that it has to be stopped.
Probably best to play down the shock aspect of what they have done, and tell them that these sites contain viruses that will wreck your computer in which case you will be very annoyed.
Also tell them that you have a way of finding out if they have been looking at such stuff, and if it happens again you will stop them using the computer. This is normally sufficient to put them of the idea.
Making a big thing of pornography will only make them more inquisitive.
This is only an opinion of course, but it has worked for me.
Good luck.

Hi Al

The porn came in the form of a screen pop-up, despite pop-ups being blocked on all machines.

We do not make any issue about nudity in this house, so he knows physically what's what.

Unfortunately he saw behaviour that had not crossed his mind before, and that is what I find disturbing. Kid's innocence is short lived enough as it is, without having adult behaviour thrust upon them at such an early age (Alex is 7 next month).

Anyway, I have trialled Net Nanny and found it very effective, to the point of being intrusive with 'net use, and have ended up licensing the use of the program for the next 12 months.
