Which was only added in 1958 because of the godless commies.

I've never understood the visceral and utterly unreasoned hatred of communism.

Communism.

"a theory or system of social organization in which all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs."

Communism sounds good in theory, but, is there anywhere in todays world where it really works ?

Yes, but that doesn't really address Andrews question.

Also somehow communism == socialism to a large percentage of America.

I was puzzled with Phil's reply . It might point towards an answer in so far as Communism has never been allowed to happen particularly by the Americans ...... no, it doesn't explain the visceral hatred.

Perhaps Phil could push along the argument by giving us a definition of 'visceral".

Maybe..., I'm thinking.

Well, if Communism has not been seen to really work, perhaps people look towards what was happening in East Germany (as an example) before unification where the Stasi were feared, and encouraged folks to inform on their friends and family. Also not much hope of free speech or dissent.

I sure would have a visceral (relating to deep inward feelings rather than to the intellect) fear of that.

That's missing the point. Why did and do the Americans have a visceral hatred Communism?

Bizzare as it may sound to some not all East Germans saw the fall of the Wall as a good thing. I have spoken to a good few Russians too who would happily go back to soviet communism for the anarchy and horror of the oligarchs and re-emergence of Putin... but I was mot proposing this.

What the Americans did to South and Central America aswell as Korea and Vietnam, the appalling mess of Lybia, that they'd rather make Cuba a brothel rather than Castro, the cold war, cruise missiles and and and....how they fought tooth and nail against trades unions in the USA is terrible frightening and ...well....why!?

If, for a moment we consider East Germany as a Communist State then we should also consider China to be such. Is China a failed state? Debates for another day.

Why do the Americans have a visceral hatred of communism?

Just to answer "is there anywhere in todays world where it really works" I would point to Vietnam.

In one if the funniest films ever there is a gag around 'would that it were so simple which finally gets cut to, 'its complicated.' Totally priceless, Hail Caesar! with George Clooney at his best. The film is not irrelevant to this thread but is a total scream, never mind. Vietnam is 'complicated not the least by America losing the war and then using subversion and World politics to further crush this poor people of Vietnam nto the mud. They have emerged smiling and appear to have little ill will towards America. They are a Communist State who have also included capitalistic investment but the people seen to be so more sane than their comrades in China. This is all imho and over the years I have only been to both China and Vietnam there times each but I am most impressed with Vietnam.

Why is America so afraid? Is that easier?

Passing the buck? What do you think Phil? Other folk are of course free to pitch in. What have you actually contributed to the debate?

Not a lot going by your question. :?

It's not a subject that I have ever given much thought about, so my "database" is severely depleted.

Maybe a pertinent question would be 'when did it start'? I get the impression that it started after WW2 so perhaps it started as a military spending justification - the commies will destroy the american dream - that got out of hand? That's pure conjecture though.
Sorry, I couldn't resist!
