Shame - he was a big figure in the audio world. I never met him, and actually haven't had much chance to listen to any of his amplifers - but I always liked the styling.

He knew his stuff and created some great designs.

It would be good to spell his name correctly though - Tim de Paravicini.

What a shame, well respected, and obviously skilled. Cancer is a mean end and cuts short far too many lifes.

Thanks for posting this. I didn't know. I've had a pair of his amplifiers since 1985. The only other valve amps I've had. So we could import them into NZ without getting duty, he partially disassembled them to make them a "kit". I met him a few times after at shows and I was surprised he did it. The EAR 509 was something he was very proud of as it was, I think, one of the first EAR commercial products and quite original in design. I've taken in a few to get going again for people and made many contacts over the world to do same.

He was a very direct person much like his amps and I felt you had to go through a vetting process to prove you knew something before he would engage but after that he got quite chatty especially about sticking big V style engines in small cars.

Most times I rang EAR for some info, he would answer and always remember those amplifiers. He is quite a character of the industry to lose.

Met him a few times back in Heybrook days, he once took me and PJC out for a meal in what appeared to be a portacabin in Finchley, but turned out to be one of the best Japanese restaurants in the UK (his wife is Japanese). Best meal I ever had!

More recently, I had a few interesting and lively discussions on Facebook. Hugely opinionated on every subject under the sun, and left you in no doubt whatsoever what he thought of your views, but happy to listen to a well argued point.

The world is definitely a less colourful place today.

Another familiar face on the show circuit gone. 2020 has certainly thinned
the ranks of artists, engineers etc.

Cannot say I ever got on well with Tim (he reminded me too much of that
Lazarus Long quote), but he was certainly a character and will be missed.
