The EL34 is not humble in my opinion. The problem is understanding how to interface it to the speaker. I really like simplicity of the Kitic design with this tube. It is like the big brother of the EL84. Transparent, great tone, stability of pitch and easy to get output transformers for.

That all being said, my experience is that differences in sound have more to do with the OT, with the loading of the output tube and the type of driver stage before it. When people report differences in sound, I really wonder if they know what has caused the difference?

Heard a nice little story about Tommy Cooper the other day. Whilst on holiday in Cairo, he went into a shop and tried on a Fez. Immediately, the shop keeper said "just like that. Not like that; like that!" Cooper was astonished that his catch phrase was known to a Egyptian shop keeper, and asked him how he knew it. The shop keeper replied " I don't know what it means but every English tourist who comes in here puts on a Fez says that. You're the first one not to, so I thought I'd say it for you!"
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Acquired a mached quad of Tung Sol reissue EL34B this afternoon.
Had specced them as "hot, late distortion" in the matching instructions for Hotrox.

My verdict on these is that they are the best EL34 I've heard. Lovely tubes, as good as vintage Mullards.
Rich, saturated tone, superb top end, free of glassiness and extended without being in your face.
Super bass tone. I love 'em.
Running 382V at 55mA, dissipating 21W at idle, they sound the biz.
Building and listening to that 300B OTL has enabled me to move the performance of my pentode monoblocks, up a few notches.

After great success with the RH307 Super and the RH84 Mk2, the RH34 will be my next not so humble LF SEP channel

Low Frequency Single Ended Pentode Channel ?

On the circuit V1a has several quite different valves listed. Is the circuit supposed to work with any of them ? :?

The biasing resistor on the lm317 will need to change depending on choice of valve ... and there's a quite a range between ecc83 etc, so let's assume that this is just a potential circuit with quite a lot of maths to do depending on the valves used. I think the PSU is quite ugly too but that depends on the secondary windings for the HT. I'd much rather use full wave GZ34 than mess with whatever is being used on the schematic.

Still there you go!
