Fane 15" full range speaker

then some obscenely large speakers
Obscenely large sealed boxes...... by anthony cresswell, on Flickr
no finishing work at all has been done, i stuck the drivers in to see how much panel damping will be needed as thew cabs are abit lively. Doesnt need that much, much less than i thought. Currently no damping at all in them.

3dB more sensitive than my "12s"

Impressive Ant, though I quite liked the fridge freezer .
Yes, it'll be very interesting to see how you and yer dad think they compare to the 12"ers - the extra 3dB opens up some flea power amp options...

Impressions.
Completely effortless.
Very clean (that word again) they don't seem to distort at all even at antisocial levels
Surprisingly capable of subtle and delicate for a dustbin lid in a coffin. Very capable all round actually
Much more even than the frequency response plots would suggest
The extra efficiency is very welcome with the f5 as I am using a passive with a khozmo shunt stepped attenuator, and the f5 needs a little help in the gain department. The shunt doesnt help.
Slightly sweeter than the 12's
Abit of panel resonance which is to be expected, i can get in and add more bracing easily enough
Sensitive to toe in and height, luckily the fane boxes they are stood on (yes they are stood on cardboard boxes.....) put them at the right height.
Get a few degrees of toe in on them and they image rather well. Better than I expected. Needs to be bang on though or they lose the image.
And they look like washing machines

What every woman wants then Ant...
The tube manual is quite like a telephone book. The number of it perfect. It is useful to make it possible to speak with a girl. But we can't see her beautiful face from the telephone number

More impressions after a week.
Still effortless.
Better on the pedestal style stands I knocked together for them, grounds some of the cab panel noise out.
Added some internal damping, nothing special just some spare bed pillows out of the airing cupboard, one in the bottom of each cab.
Better again, I dont think they need any more.
Bass has opened out as they have run in, nice and smooth now. The bit of on axis shout has calmed down too, and oddly, the damping ive put in has affected this too. Tamed it abit. Dunno why.
The stands being much thinner than the cabs has made them look less monstrous too.
I'll get a pic on once I can find a Tommy bar to prise son number one off the damned computer so i can upload one.......
Still no finishing work done, i'll do that once I'm happy no more woodwork is needed, and have tried abit of damping on the rear panel behind the driver.
Plan is to cover the front top and back panel in the cream suede material I used on the mets and add some either painted or veneered side panels.

Looks like they are following the same break-in regime that the 12 inch units did. It'll take around 2 months for them to settle in.

Wadding is daft, just a mechanical filter that will damage musical phase. The cure if you need one is to brace or line the cabinets with a rigid material like tiles or steel plate. I think it is just run in, the drivers need to loosen up.

I intend on making a pair of these for my wifes living room system.
I will also get the benefit from them as well.
Any further information available to support the methods of cabinet bracing suggested would be appreciated, I'm ripping down 25mm Plywood this week for the boxes.

Surprise, surprise, I'm going to disagree with the good Doctor about something.
Here's what I got when I put some nice 6.5" midbass drivers in a solidly-built ported box:
Sounded like a boxy mess, exactly what you'd expect from a response curve like that.
The yellow curve is what I finished up with:
Much much nicer.
The difference was applying enough lining to kill off internal standing waves and reflections.
Blocking the port helped on its own, but the problems were still there - they just bounced out of the cabinet through the cone instead of coming out of the port. Remember, it's only a layer of cardboard seperating the inside of the cabinet from the outside world.
