#1 13E1 Valves

Post by Ray P »

I have a chum in South Africa who's looking to buy some 13E1s - anyone got some spares they're happy to part with for a fair price?

Cheers

Depends on what you call a "fair price"?

Plenty NOS and used on eBay for between £45 & £90 or so, which to me at least seems pretty fair. I certainly wouldn't let a NOS go for less than £90...

Thanks Nick. I saw the ebay listings and have pointed him at the £90 NOS items but if you would be prepared to part with some for £90 (which I think is a fair price BTW) would you be happy to deal?

Which 13E1's do you have?

10 NIB and 2 used. Honestly, I don't really want to sell any other than the 2 used ones which are pretty silvered but test OK and I would let go pretty cheaply, say £30 each.

Some day, I will sell the rest - it's stupid hoarding mentality - it was a bit obsessive - I have many more valves than anyone would use in multiple lifetimes.

Thanks Nick. I was asking about which types you have because I seem to recall from Steve's 13E1 SE-OTL build that there are differences, IIRC the later versions have more substantial internals that give better heat dissipation when the valves are run hard - I must see if I can find the posts.

Tbh some of them are in unopened boxes - I'll have a look tomorrow... It'll be good to have a look anyway as they are a startlingly attractive valve.

There's at least 4 types - 3 different bulb shapes and two types of cooling fins...

The earlier ones have one anode fin each side (labelled in white), the later ones (January 1972, labelled in blue)) have 3 each side. All are marked with the STC logo.

For the 13E1, the USA ref is 7972, UK forces is CV6045 but also CV2377 which seems the same but a slightly different bulb. JS number is 5690-99-037-2221

I seem to have a few more of these than I thought. Some of the unboxed ones below showing the different anode fin types and 3 bulb shapes.

Found another load - one of the other boxes is from "Z & I Aero Services" - they rebranded other manufacturer's valves as "Zaerix" - the older members of this group will surely remember them. I used to go to their shop in Tottenham Court Road in the '70s to buy valves - TCR also had Proops (a mecca for weird & wonderful stuff). Main other shop for valves (for me) was H.L. Smiths in Edgware Road.

It's odd we never bumped into each other...

So are there any of your 13E1 stash that you're open to selling Nick? If so, let me know the specifics and I'll pass them on to see if the guy in South Africa is interested in buying.

Cheers

Sorry I didn't get back. The answer is probably not as I've far too much going on and there are plenty available on the open market at much the same prices I would charge.

Thanks Nick, I wouldn't have expected you to sell anything below the reasonable going rate for the open market - the difference is one of confidence in the seller, however, he's not got back to me on the subject so we can let it drop.
