Joe Morello - famous mainly for being Dave Brubeck's drummer.
One of the very best - this dude was COOL while looking like a mild-mannered accountant.
I only found out recently he was nearly blind.
There are a number of other great clips of Joe, plus analysis by drumming experts, well worth watching if you are keen.

<Sound FX> buzzer.... Sort of 'Over-ruled'!
Not as many 'new' notes as you'd think sometimes. It depends on the tuning.
For example using regular stacked 4th tuning intervals, a 5 string bass with a Low 'B' added below the usual EADG tuning found on a 4 string bass guitar only actually gives you 5 notes you wouldn't normally have on regular tuned 4 string bass guitar.

12 notes at most I would say

Here he is wit de 7 string.
It's very impressive - all he needs to do now is learn to write tunes with melodies that memorable you can't stop yerself whistling them, and he's sorted.
There's a distinct lack of melody atm ......

If you take it from the angle of a note on a heavier gauge string sounding slightly different to the same note on a lighter gauge string, then you have 15 slightly different sounding notes of the same pitch as can be found elsewhere on the neck, and 5 new ones gained from the lower tuning, assuming that the low string is tuned a 4th from the bottom E.
That's working off the acoustic guitar generally having 20 frets.
So Dtb is right with the new notes, and then there are 15 notes already existing elsewhere but of different timbre.

But I didn't, so 11 notes. Not different sounding notes, just notes. If you take it from the angle of a note on a heavier gauge string sounding slightly different to the same note on a lighter gauge string, then you have 15 slightly different sounding notes of the same pitch as can be found elsewhere on the neck

you chaps are making me unsure of what day it is...
are you taking about a 5 string bass with a bottom B string added to a 4 string EADG bass
or
are you talking about a 7 string guitar with indeterminate tuning?????
btw: my 4 string EADG Fender Jazz has a million more notes than DTB's( some of the notes don't even have names)

There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be

Ok, so working on Dtb's premise of tuning in 4ths (ie a low B string), there are no new notes past the 4th fret - 5th fret is low E, and you have an open E string at the same pitch following as you head to your toes, so there are 5 new notes.Nick wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2020 1:45 pmBut I didn't, so 11 notes. The low string brings B, C, C#, D and D# into the mix, but beyond that the notes the low string will cover occurred in several places before the introduction of that low string.

The answer's the same for the 5 string bass and the 7 string guitar.
You need to have some system for organising the tuning, and 4ths is as good a system as any other (and yes I know the B string being a 3rd above the G string is anomalous).
I have a name for them - they're the wrong notes
