I have just listened to the song on FLAC rip, and I agree Dave, it more than likely is keyboard synth.
I used to have difficulty telling Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer apart too - sometimes the sounds they used were very much in the same mould ...

Contacting Mr Hillage over such things is a cross between Waynes World "We're not worthy.... we're not worthy!" and Magic Thighs approaching Deep Thought etc etc.
At 2.17 to 2.31 in the G500 vid there's a a hint of bend but to my ears its mechanical and 'stepped', it doesn't have the float that the mystery sound has in the Hillage song.

not very up on these things but back in the day(1989ish) my sy77 had a pitch wheel........it certainly didn't have a 'stepped' sound. I don't know when pitch wheels emerged but it has to be a contender.......bit irrelevant now if Thomas gets the word from the horses mouth, so to speak. That's if SH can remember.Dave the bass wrote:
