I've blathered on about Leeds-based 'Brendan Croker & The 5 O'clock Shadows' before but here's a 'Voice and Fretless Bass guitar' doing amazing things IMO...
^^^ Its Brendan Croker on Vocal and a fella named Nigel Brooke on what I think is a very 80's sounding Fretless Bass which has been heavily effected (Chorus'd + Flanged + Reverb'd and a bit of compression perhaps). I 1st heard this done live by them at a small festival in the mid 80's at a very impressionable age when I was starting to play bass and spent hours and hours trying to work out what Nigel is doing on that recording, still attempting to play it 'well' to this day, I never have worked the solo part out.
There's very little about the original 5 O'clock shadows line-up that I've found out there on the 'net or Nigel Brooke in particular, but finally I've found a picture of him in a NZ newspaper feature about Kayaking! https://www.nzherald.co.nz/whanganui-ch ... KVPLVWKGY/
Hooray for the internet, If you're reading this Nigel, you're flippin' awethumne! Respek! How can someone who played like that go unrecognised for so long? S'not fair.
