Nothing wrong with Tubular Bells, apart from the fact that it can’t be played on old tin boxes, no matter what they are fitted with. Almost as good as James Galway

There was a period in the summer of ‘74 when it seemed that every single customer in our shop brought in a copy of Tubular Bells, from kids bringing their dads in to buy the new family stereo to little old ladies who’d heard it on the wireless and thought it was rather fun. I must have listened to it four or five times a day for about six months. Took about five years before I could hear it without running screaming from the room .

I guess it must be time to have another listen now!

Thanks Nick, I'd been avoiding that one but really enjoyed it. I'd forgotten just how beautiful a song it is. Might be time to dig the album out.

Shane it was probably about 1974 when a mate bought that LP I had to endure it daily that summer, we spent whole time listening for when he said “Tubular Bells”! WTF

Probably better for the mental health than a whole side of a one trick pony Album Acker Bilk, James whatsisname etc. At least Mike Oldfield could pick up a variety of instruments.

It seems only yesterday the charity shops in Scarborough were awash with the Black and White Minstrels James Last Tijuana Brass. Only 25 years ago when we moved to Scarborough. And of course plenty of Flute soloists with too many pieces of flute music on.

But the most boring show I was taken to was Swan Lake at the Royal Festival Hall by my pianist mother. I fidgeted for the whole first half, junior school age. When the interlude came I said to mum “when are they going to start singing?”
Stupid thing to do to take a under 11 boy to ballet and not at least tell him beforehand there’ll be no singing or anything. I couldn’t see the point. Waste of a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back! She’d have been better to have taken me to Chad and Dave Knees up on the Mile End Road than the South Bank cultured crap.

Hand on heart thought I never tired of mum practicing Chopin Nocturns and Etudes on the Bechstein Consert Grand for a recital she did on the BBC when I was about 8. My lasting memory of my childhood. It was heaven. I wish she had lived a little longer. I can’t listen to that music now for one it doesn’t sound as good as mum playing it live on a concert grand in out large music room. I vividly recall it and no recorded music comes close.

One of the things I've learned is that things I was deeply prejudiced about as a teenager, such as certain types of art, pieces of music, etc. actually have intrinsic value and as the years have passed so my tastes have broadened - and even if I don't 'get' something I'm more than happy to accept that others get joy from it - a case in point is the Oscar Peterson stuff referenced above - I've never emotionally clicked with this sort of music but I can appreciate the skills that it entails and I have no problem with others having an appreciation of it.

It's broader though and I believe I am generally far less opinionated and much more tolerant than I was 40 or so years ago, though I have also become far less tolerant of things that I view as unfair, manifested, for example, as a transition to being republican and socialist leaning.

Anyway, regarding solo flute, here's some hauntingly beautiful music, IMO of course.
