Unique: Adjective: Being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else:

So either it is or it isn't. Seems pretty straightforward to me.
Yes, it seems that way I agree. But the definition uses the work "kind" implying a grouping or set. So this infers that the unique-ness may be confined to a property the object has. Or in other words, a object can be both unique, and alike something else at the same time.

An example given on line of unique:

"Each person's signature is unique"

Ok, in the context of signatures, they are unique. But in the context of what are they, they are all the same, they are signatures.

So its possible that something could be unique in one or more categories. So like infinity, it would at first sight seem there was one, but on closer examination its possible to have higher orders of uniqueness, so its possible that way for objects to possess more or less of the property.

Dave the bass wrote:@ our-Chrismangler, whats with all the boo-ing at Stu's solo's? They no like the C+W?

The best explanation I can find is in Wiki, and it's described as "disputed".
During this concert when Stuart Hamm's name is announced, it often sounds like the crowd is "boo"ing him. They are not "boo"ing him, but rather "Stu"ing him- early in their touring days in the late 1980s after a concert when Hamm's name was announced, the crowd was cheering "Hamm, Hamm, Hamm". Guitarist Steve Vai grabbed the mic and yelled "Stuuuuuuu". The yell stuck ever since. Joe Satriani notes in this Live in San Francisco concert, "They 'Stu' him because they love him".

However, it must be noted that there are a minority of Satriani's older fans who use the "Stuuuuu" cheer to actually boo Hamm, for a number of reasons, one of which is that some of Satriani's fans don't believe that Hamm is as good a bass player as Matt Bissonette (at the 2008 Satriani Satchafunkilus tour in Manchester, UK, there were at least 2 people holding up signs reading "Where's Matt?" and "Bring back Matt", referring to Bissonette). Another reason for the booing is that many fans who have attended multiple Satriani concerts notice that Hamm's bass solo has remained exactly the same over the years, unlike other virtuosic bass players who improvise at least part of their solos as opposed to playing a pre-notated solo.

I have a mental vision of the Monty Python crew doing the "unique" discussion.

We must continue this at the next meet up.

To try and formalise this.

We can define a test U that is true if its subject is unique.

As we know that no two things are precisely same, we can say that for any object x

U(x) will be true.

Now we can define a set of filters f, which apply a cryterion to a object, such that U(f(x)) may be true or false.

For example

f = "has brought a 833 amp built into a table to owston"

so

U(f(phil)) = true

but if

f = "has brought a 833 amp to owston"

U(f(phil)) = false.

So now its possible to create a set S, with contains all the filtering functions f that for a particular object x return a true U,

ie. S is the set of all f's for a particular x where U(f(x)) is true.

We can now define a integer C which for a particular x is the cardinality (number of elements) of the set S for that x. We know that for every x

U(x)

is true, so C(x) for any x will be at least 1.

So we now have a positive integer C for any x that gives us a measure of in how many ways x is unique. So now we can apply a order, such that that if

C(x) > C(y)

we can justiflibly say x is more unique that y.

Anyway, you are probably right, you usually are. :)

So you've effectively proven that Phil is more unique than the rest of us.

But we all knew he was special anyway...
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.
