#1 Tapping.

Post by pre65 »

As a result of the heatsink/tapping discussions yesterday, I came across (on Ebay) a set of taps where the taper and second cut the thread smaller size than normal. So taper is smallest, second is a tad bigger, and plug finishes the thread to proper size.

Seemed to me a good idea, particularly for small threads. So I ordered a set of M3, but they will be a week or so coming. When they do get here I'll practice on a scrap bit and see what happens. I'm not expecting much for the price, but you never know.

Yep, I buy my drills from them.

Not being too set in my ways, I tried Nicks way of lubrication (oil in a pot) and it's just as good as the spray I had used previously, and less messy. That was M8 x 1.25 in aluminium.

I was drilling four holes in a heatsink, to tap M3.

I used a slightly smaller drill than 2.5mm for a pilot hole, but when I changed to the 2.5mm drill it did not seem to be removing any material.

So I measured it with a vernier caliper (non digital) and it seemed to be only 2.4mm. I then spent ages finding my metric micrometer and the drills are indeed, only 2.4mm. It may not seem a lot difference, but it might explain why I've had trouble with M3. There were only 2 left out of a packet of 10, and there are no markings on the shank, checked with a magnifying glass.

I usually check drill size with a vernier before use but these were in a plastic container marked 2.5mm.

I've had to order some more now. :(

Steady on Greg. You have absolutely no idea where they came from.

I'm not a fan of anything Chinese, but not because of bad quality. Whoever packaged those drills made a mistake, but that's just one of those things. I doubt there was any malicious intent in their action.

He who never made a mistake never did anything at all.

I phoned a friend in the village, he's into model engineering, and he's loaned me a drill.

It's a thou under 2.5mm, so it could be a number 40, but it will do the job.

I found a chart online giving the metric and decimal sizes of fractional, letter and number drills. I've printed it off and laminated it for future reference. :)

Just a thought, 2.4mm is just about 3/32 inch ...
