Any recommendations for the MC loading cap in my phono stage, what do folks use?
It's 0.001uF.

Nothing, try one and see if it makes a difference, but I have never found any need. A 220pf silver mica maybe to remove RF from the input is all I use.

Did you mean cartridge load resistor? It will all depend on the ratio of your step up transformer setting. If that is what you meant, I can link you to some helpful posts on this topic.
Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?

Here's a pic of the input, it's both balanced and unbalanced, the 1nF cap is connected across +ve and 0v for unbalanced, and +ve and -ve for balanced. any mileage in using a good cap here, or changing the other caps and resistors?

I use 10nF at the input for MC cartridges. For an input resistor of 100 ohms (RL).
With or without it, there is a difference. The value should range between 1nF and 68nF, probably - this depends on the cartridge, i.e. the resistance of the coil, but even more on the input resistor, all of which will create an RC bandpass filter.
All the above is relevant for MC input directly to active circuitry.
