I've just been doing some what-ifs with psud and it reports piv exceeded with 1008 at 0.25 secs for some 1000piv diodes....
should I re-jig to get rid of this?
diet : sorted...I put the secondary Tx impedance right and the problem disappeared

Is there not an option to use two diodes in series ?
Just checked, 2 x 1N4007 = 2,000v
Just checked, 2 x 1N4007 = 2,000v

Sounds to me like it's doing a big peak when it's starting up? Took me a long time to learn this usually means "bad step response" (very resonant PSU). Possibly

PS: but if you put a more realisitc winding resistance in that's probably what it was.
