Re: Nothing In Particular

Sorry about your situation Paul. :(

My mother was 10 when the the Crystal Palace burned, they could see it from their house, it lit up the sky.

It's been asked since how was that possible as it was made of cast iron and glass, ah but the interiors were timber. Lots of timber beams.

Absolutely ...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Sounds like a job for the repair shop!
They have a ceramics lady that works wonders, and the history would make it a good candidate

Yes that had crossed my mind!

You'd need to practice a look of shock/amazement and then burst into tears. They love tugging at the emotional strings...

Re: Nothing In Particular

May be worth having a professional restorer look at it. They can do amazing things, even with badly broken, glued and stapled, china.

Re: Nothing In Particular

Definitely replace that with a proper capacitor; it looks too small for its capacitance, even before wondering what voltage is across it. 20 years is a very good life for a pump, so I think it can be excused for a capacitor failing.

A little more on this: The original capacitor was 25mm in ...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Failed capacitors on pumps are rather common. It's because they make the capacitor too small, forcing a high voltage gradient across the dielectric, causing early demise. And the giveaway is invariably low capacitance. We had this problem with about 600 pumps, when I worked out what the problem ...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Just a quick heads-up...

We have an older gshp which has been great since installation.

Last week we got an LP (low pressure) alert on the ground source loop. Diagnostics showed that attempting a service mode cold start of the ground source loop pump failed.

Our provider said this proved that the ...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Bit of a bummer. Sorry to hear that Paul. I hope you can keep the symptoms under control - preventing vascular damage is obviously the key. Is this hereditary?

Re: JFETs and active crossovers

Bearing in mind individual LSK170s are 8 quid or so, to get a "matched quad" of 2SK170s for only 9 quid seems... too good a deal to be true.

It'd be really interesting to see just how that "matched quad" actually measure...

Edit: there's a fair bit on DIYAUDIO about fake Chinese FETs, including ...

I’ll never forget dropping Tom to Aberystwyth in 2005. Felt like we were abandoning him in Outer Mongolia. By the second year he’d sorted out a posh apartment overlooking the marina, sharing with three girls. Didn’t seem so bad that time!

Seems to have stood him in good stead (see first item ...

There's 'small' and then there's 'really small'...

https://www.electronicsweekly.com/news/ ... m-2024-09/

That's definitely really really small: 006003. And 10nF too.

Terrifying that there can be 1,000 in a modern smartphone!

Re: Nothing In Particular

I tend to use APC/Schneider Smart-UPS UPS systems at home...

I have an older one, and SMT-750, which makes a fairly horrid noise on battery.

Bit loathe to chuck it as they are expensive, but have a listen...
