OK Richard, you're only going to try this for the driver stage, aren't you ? So the first thing is whether your power supply can supply an extra 20-25mA per channel to run the shunt alongside each 6C45pi , yes ? If not, then you are limited to just doing the basic change, which is to substitute a 6C...

If you can try the VR tube option Richard, make sure to do that . I'm still skeptical of making a solid-state shunt that sounds clean and natural at the top end . Remember the signal current loop goes back through the devices.
'I remain to be convinced' ( as does Paul, I suspect ) .

Paul Quick Q while you're there - Re. BGs . I know and like them, but am aware that 'no cap' is the best cap of course. Now, would you say that BG's add a 'colouring' to the sound, or would it be better to say a 'de-colouring' of tone ? On the Auroras, which had very little cap-influence on the sign...

NG for

You've done this sort of thing before, haven't you ? I located the problem to be from the rectifier area. Then I checked two tags on the ends of two rectifiers ; supposedly joined by a thick piece of wire . There was no voltage between these points ( as expected ) on the left channel and something s...

Oh no you've blown my simple theory, FBS . So was the 'Stray' album engineered by John Wood ? I hadn't noticed 'Stray' before but have just looked and the prices are significant . One to check out then ? One other great reference album, 'Aerial Boundaries' by Michael Hedges . Apparently digital , bu...

Here's a weird one

I've got these home-made DC filament supplies I've been using on and off for a while , just put them back on the amp breadboard in order to power two 6C4C's . Noticed when I put them in and installed the 6C4C's that one was showing 5.6V, the other 6.6V . The design is roughly as used by Thorsten in ...

Anything on the late 60's / early 70's 'Transatlantic' label - ie. Pentangle and John Renbourne . Best recordings I've ever heard . Pentangle 'Basket of Light', 'Cruel Sister' , 'Pentangling' Renbourne 'The Lady and the Unicorn' , 'Sir John a lot of merry ..etc.etc ' Oh, basically anything where Joh...

In the cases shown, you won't be getting any music, and you'd pretty quickly ask yourself - why did I take the valve out of its socket ?
:!:

I never had a case where this caused a problem , it's just an unlikely occurance.

Plaster

Plaster should be good if it's sufficiently dense, and thick enough ( > 1" ) . Marc Henry makes plaster mid/HF horns for 'Musique Concrete' . I saw some of his early ones a few years ago at ETF2004, and they were very nicely made and seemed hard and 'dead' acoustically . http://www.musique-conc...

Not sure ... only thing I can offer is that you can use a CCS and one or two VR tubes to provide shunt-regulation for a driver stage , as per here :

I think I could summarise my aims on this , roughly , as : High sensitivity to allow small 2-4W valve amps to be used - ie. the best-sounding amps possible . TONE and dynamics in the speakers , hopefully blending as well as possible. Frequency getting down to 35Hz at the low-end . Headroom :!: Tryin...

Hmmm, yes , nice.
I will see how big this box is, when I get it . Lay out some sockets and transformers and get an idea how much 'stuff' I can put on there .
