Re: Pete Millett LR phono preamp
Still not been able to replicate it in Spice - measuring the response on the SUT secondaries suggests the reverse-RIAA is OK with the MC loading of 150R (plus I think the Whest is set to 470R and the response was bang on the money). Actually now I've typed that, I should adjust the load down to 50R...

Re: Pete Millett LR phono preamp
I haven't looked but don't those inverse EQ thingies have to be loaded or should I say not loaded down? Maybe a tx input presents too low a Z for it?
Cheers,
Stephen

Re: Solder
It can't be a common thing. Maybe modern bits post lead free are designed for it. It's hard to get anything other than anecdotal information. The world is built using lead free solder now. Soldering stations aren't dissolving. I'm too attached to my 40 year soldering iron which was a 21st present. I...

Re: Solder
I asked a similar question a while back. And after, selected that same solder Ray uses. Ever since, the tips on my Weller dissolve. I've been through about 6 or more in a couple of years and I'm not a heavy user. Before with leaded solder, tips lasted years, maybe even a decade. I'm now considering ...

Just saying.... waiting until I tidied up a few things is how I lost mine.Cressy Snr wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 7:56 am Cheers Stephen, I have a couple more things to do to tidy up loose ends and will incorporate fuses in the HT line.
Wouldn’t have thought to do it….until now that is.

Re: Fun with Feedback
As I found out to great cost, fuses in secondary can save iron from destruction. Primary fuses not so much. It's a small thing as you don't want it to happen again for whatever reason ...

Re: On the subject of HiFi
My HiFi is much like Shane's wish list. I want the experience to remind me of live while not being totally accurate whatever that is coz accuracy is a myth. In some of my recordings, I like little messing with the sound; old Mercurys, RCAs, Deccas etc from the late 50s. Likewise jazz from that perio...

Re: A Mains Cable Story
Mains cables polarise opinion as so many aim their arguments at the notion that it's all about supply of power only. The argument goes something like "there's miles of wire before hand so the final metre means nothing" ergo, it make no difference. Or something along the lines of "if t...

Re: A Mains Cable Story
Please note the following: 2 x RG213 Co-ax is not suitable for mains use - no CPC and no protective outer sheath The fuse in the plug protects the cable, not the equipment, so should never be shorted Using unfused plugs on a British ring main is dangerous. If you want to use them, convert the ring ...

Re: A Mains Cable Story
Thanks Stephen. It's interesting that you could hear differences despite using old-school power supplies with chokes and valve rectifiers. My take was the differences weren't worth it and not an improvement for what I want to hear but I could see for some, it would work positively. The friends that...

A Mains Cable Story
Warning, it's a bit long. First a preface about my bias. I’m confident why mains cables make a difference from a technical POV. But maybe that’s another discussion. My bias is, being a DIYer, that I can make better improvements for the money by investment in making my gear and the components/topolog...

Re: Speaker cables
This is what James said a while back - hope he doesn't mind me posting this email. It was probably a simpler comment than I thought - more along the lines of what Scott said about the USB just needing to meet the standard - but make of it what you will : OK - revision of assessment... Today I recei...
