I bit the bullet and purchased a knew pi. I checked the BCK, Data and LRCK. All the signals were present. So I plucked up my courage and soldered the wires and plugged into my TDA1541A and to my absolute delight it works! I have all the web radio stations and on initial listening sounds pretty good....

When I connect the scope to the LRCK it doesn't even trip the timebase so there appears to be just no signal.

Fascinating stuff. I just wish there weren't over 300 pages to read! I think I am right in thinking that to simply reclock the I2S to a local DAC (all in one box) I just need the FIFO board?

I just realised that if you run an update of Raspbian operating system it is possible to use I2S. You just need to enable the modules (which I have done).
