Re: Cables with SS and Valve Amps

This is an Interesting discussion - of course my OTL's use gobs of NFB to get the output impedance down, it's the only way they stand any chance of working at all. I've found that they are at their happiest when the speaker cables are nice and short.

Re: Nothing In Particular

Interesting how this goes though isn't it. 10 years ago my entire signal chain had to have valves in it. Hence the years of struggle with SUT's. Eventually thought 'feck it', bought the solid state Whest and never looked back. And now I'm building a solid state linestage - with op-amps in it (shock...

Re: Phono bake-off

Sounds like a plan - Huddersfield's good for me. I'll bring my Whest along, I'd be really quite interested to hear it up against the NVA Phono 2 actually, alongside others. Although right now I'm pretty happy with it, even after hearing it against others at Owston, if it turns out that I can get bet...

Re: RIP Don Garber

Thanks - I kind of regret selling them now because I'd have liked to have heard them with the Mets - they weren't all that happy with the Hornings, they just couldn't control those big bass drivers very well, but the midrange tone was lovely. I always liked 2A3's. I know from Steve's historical post...

RIP Don Garber

It seems Don Garber of Fi has sadly passed on. I'm guessing not many here would be familiar with his work but for some years I owned a pair of the Fi 2A3 monoblocks and I still have a Fi Yph phonostage. I really liked the guy's design aesthetic - I kinda feel as though I should keep the Yph around a...

Re: Audio Talk meet Owston, Doncaster, 10&11 june 17

Did you consider the diy audio forum's Paradise phono amp build? I'd not heard of that, to be honest - I don't look at diyAudio all that much, maybe I should! :) I had a quick look at the schematic - balanced design? The preamp I'm working on is a balanced differential so the idea of a balanced pho...

Re: Audio Talk meet Owston, Doncaster, 10&11 june 17

Any step up transformer put in front of a NVA Phono stage will kill what it does musically, it will pollute it. I could explain but it will just get off topic and probably activate the nob heads again. This just reminded me of a slightly amusing event shortly after I bought the Whest. I know that a...

Re: Audio Talk meet Owston, Doncaster, 10&11 june 17

We'll have you listening to "Selling England By The Pound" in no time. You wish him that much harm!? So mean, I thought you were a nice fella :) And what, pray, is wrong with 11 minutes 43 seconds of "Battle of Epping Forest" ? Apart from the whole, not getting those 11 mi...
