It keeps the data and clock signals separate, which is why it should perform better than spdif. However, I2S really needs to be used for short connections, say 10c...

Phil, if you want to be a bit more ambitious consider hooking up the DAC to the Denon with an I2S interface - it'll sound better than spdif.
