Re: On My Bench.

Ah okay, I just wanted to be clear in my own mind. Nick said something about the cause and I wasn't sure if the finger was being pointed conclusively at the op amp.

Re: On My Bench.

SS dummy at the back of the class puts his hand up sheepishly... So the one output is duff and the implication is then I think that it's unlikely to have been caused by external effects and it's "just one of those things" that the op amp has had an internal failure? And this is quite unusu...

Re: Salad Bowl Speakers

No, it isn't Ray's case. I suspect they probably would find their equilibrium, but the weight of the driver might mean they'd be tilted downwards. I still think a short four vertical legged "crown" stand to sit them on, perhaps with a horizontal cruciform to join the legs together would lo...

Re: Salad Bowl Speakers

Artistically, I quite like the juxtaposition of the vertical legs. The Xes might look a bit like an ale keg :-). I'm interested to see where you go Ray.

Edit - on reflection 4 legs rather than 3 would be a lot more stable I think.

Re: Salad Bowl Speakers

A tripod type arrangement (3 vertical legs for the bowls to sit on) might be easier than a quad perhaps? Or two Xes, one front and one back, so the speaker finds its level?

Re: Valve Headphone Amp

Yep that's worth a try.

I can't help thinking though that there's something going on that's not good - very modest vibration increases significantly with the lid in place. The trafo does not seem happy.

Re: Valve Headphone Amp

The SuperReg made a huge difference, it transformed the sound. I've slowly boxed it up, in a similar style to the DAC I boxed recently. . 20231126_181715.jpg . 20231126_183211.jpg . Interestingly though when I put the lid on humming becomes audible and there are vibrations though the chassis. With t...

Re: Solder

I'm getting towards the end of my reel and will need some more - is "no clean" solder any good?

I haven't cleaned any of my pcbs after soldering - am I asking for trouble long term?

Re: Salad Bowl Speakers

Mmm tricky. A jointer would probably do the job, but I'm guessing you don't happen to have one of those laying around . Perhaps 4? sheets of 60 grit (maybe 40 to start) stuck down to a flat surface, then slide the bowls' rim back and forth. But no guarantees, and you have a decent, more reliabl...

Re: Side Projects

I have two or three of those TKDs too Ant, seem pretty good without going to silly money.

They're a bit fiddly to wire up as they're small, as you say Ant. I drafted a small PCB with solder pads for wires which is much easier to use than splaying the pins and trying to solder wires to them.

At 75 Robert Plant is a rock god. I can't imagine what he must have been like 50 years ago. Immense tonight.
