Re: My Swansong speaker build
Ray, Yes I just send them a dxf file. I can do the CAD drawing work for you and save as a dxf. All I need from you is some sketch with all the dims on. Seems post Covid lockdown they no longer deal direct with the public cold calling at the HQ in Darwen. However I can have a word with the workshop m...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
Just got back home from picking up my CNC cut sheets from Peter Benson (Plywood) Ltd. They have done a superb job as usual that makes my life building the cabinets so much easier. I opted for 8' x 4' Furniture Grade Chipboard since I was told that using BB Birch Ply would likely triple the cost. I n...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
Guys, You're not on your own wanting to know how these will sound when built. I do have great expectations. Hope they don't turn out to be Wuthering Heights  Whilst awaiting the cutting of and delivery of the speaker panels, yesterday I made up a pair of binding post plates from 3mm aluminium. ...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
I thought you were using that old hacksaw you mentioned... ;) Nah, Lynn's a little old in the tooth these days, but don't tell her I said that  Just kidding, but seriously I didn't fancy routeing accurately all those driver holes in the front baffles, and the relative small cutting fee they ch...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
Just placed my order with Peter Benson (Plywood) Limited in Darwen for the CNC routing of the front baffles and bases and cutting all the other panels using their CNC controlled flat bed beam-saw. Hope to pick up the machined panels sometime next week.

Re: My Swansong speaker build
- If it was mine, I'd go for a sealed box for the LF drivers. Apologies for not responding earlier Chris. Having discussed with Scott sealed v vented for the LF drivers for these speakers I will build them initially as vented. This gives the option of running them sealed if desired. I have the opti...

Re: Purifi-based monitor - options
All positive Mark and no sarcasm was intended. Perhaps I could have worded my comment on the slow development of these speakers a little better. I have a few air core and iron core inductors left over from previous or abandoned projects. You are welcome to use them for the final tuning if I have sui...

Re: Purifi-based monitor - options
Slow progress Mark, but progress none the less. Your Colleague for whom you are designing and building these speakers must be a very patient man. Sounds like you may need a little more attenuation on the tweeter. From the manufacturers specs there would seem around 6dB difference in efficiency betwe...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
Might not have described the service they provide very well. :( The £10 charge is for only the cutting of a single sheet into panels. Perhaps there was an element of 'mates rates' as I have a good rapport with the guys there. Takes less than 10 mins to program and cut a full 8' x 4' sheet on their b...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
If you interested I have a number of sheets of 5/8” birch BB grade ply in 5 ft x 5 ft sheets. I could let you have for a good price. I know it’s not quite 18mm, but when veneered wouldn’t be far off. Depending on how quickly you want to start this project, could drop off at Owston ( cut down of cou...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
In my post #4 I mentioned the Magnesium alloy cones of the MarkAudio CHN50 drivers were a bright silver in colour and I intended to spray the cones matt black to better integrate aesthetically with the rest of the drivers. I did spray 1 pair with a very light coating of acrylic matt black from car p...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
Scott/Colin - do the bass drivers in this scheme not use the whole volume of the (big ) cabinet, then ? Mark, Not quite the whole volume of the cabinet. There is a approx. 20 litre closed box section for the midrange units and tweeter and then the small sealed volume for the Hypex amp. Apart from t...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
Very interesting design and it prompts a couple of questions - as ever! I experimented with ring circle small drivers myself and found it can work well, it did have some lobbing measurable but not audible to my ears. Questions that occurred to me are: 1) What were your thoughts on time aligning the...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
I have now re-drafted the driver layout similar to the layout to the photo in post #6. This places both the Revelator bass drivers within the same shared volume. After speaking to Scott regards this layout he advised to design the bass volume as a double chamber reflex, hence the reason for the 2 se...

Re: My Swansong speaker build
Mark and Nick, Thanks for the feedback observations. The tweeter is a little low and checking ear height at my listening position means a 5 deg tilt of the cabs. Too much me thinks. I can reconfigure the driver array to something like this: http://www.audio-talk.co.uk/colin/MOAB02.JPG This will brin...
