Re: A plus for our DIY audio projects

I have views on IP. As you'd expect, really. Yes, indeed, but AFAIK, that IP is still available. My point is more related to if it had been out of print for some years, you then prevented it being available even in the case of a library, that's where I think there are issues. https://help.archive.o...

Re: 6.3v indirectly heater valve PCB (possible group buy?)

In a 4 box design I want to only pass DC through the umbilical. Just to be pedantic, if you are only passing DC through the umbilical then maybe you don't need the second regulator. One issue when using a umbilical is how you manage any ground connections, and preventing ground loop currents from t...

" The important thing to know is that engaging real people in person is worth more than engaging strangers on social media.". Ah, yeah but no but yeah but, if I hadn't had engaged with you on this forum I wouldn't have met you in person. And that was a good thing 👍 I agree, but I think th...

Re: Help understanding Smoothing Capacitor Ripple Current

The primary effect ripple current has on a cap is internal heating. Because of that, you need to consider the RMS equivalent value, not the peak which you are trying to extract in your example. So the actual RMS value will be a combination of the peak value and the duration over the cycle that the c...

Re: My Niece's First Vinyl System

Might be worth checking the 100nf cap across the mains input in the amp (if replacing use an X2 or X1), and/or adding a more effective mains filter. Would suggest its going to be susceptible to mains interference.

Re: 1626 HPA

I would also try standing signal ground off safety ground with another 100R (maybe with a bipass cap), see if that removes the need for transformers at the front.

The pair of 100R to ground on the heater supply may still be worth doing.

Re: Nothing In Particular

I thought this was an interesting piece on Don Garber and Fi, and the NY valve scene back in the day. It really made me wish I could find my Sound Practices CD. https://jeffsplace.positive-feedback.com/in-remembrance-of-don-garber-an-american-audio-master-1935-2017-godspeed/ Google is your friend h...

Quasimodo looks like a great little tool. I had a quick look at the thread and will have a look at getting some PCBs done. Probably SMD. I will remove those bypass caps as suggested.
I think I have away the last of the batch I got made. Sorry.

My only contribution would be to remind you about 866's as an alternative to U19.

Re: Active Mains Filter

Reading the page, I think its saying the power analyzer is accurate to that, its just a conditioner not a re-generator. I will see if Dave has two of them in stock. Would be fun to run two in series and see if the numbers are any better for the second one :-) I must stop looking on ebay https://www....

Re: Active Mains Filter

Ok, so jitter would look like a constant correction over the 360 deg of the sine wave. Brownouts would not be what this is trying to correct. Its not intended to be a UPS replacement. The control system would have an idea of the largest correction it will try and fix, and give up after that point an...

Re: Active Mains Filter

From the text I posted: Take the input 50Hz, use that to create a lower distortion noise free version synchronized with the incoming mains. The phase shift was why I then suggested a DC coupled amp riding on the AC. The reference signal can be delayed by one cycle anyway without it being any less a ...

Re: Active Mains Filter

Yes I know. I sell a product that does exactly that with a view to powering turntables. My thought about just correcting the distortion was one of efficiency. For most usage cases the benefit can be had by not correcting frequency just distortion and noise.
