Re: Converting EL38 amp to 300b Amp

That looks like it should work. Would be interesting to compare the vreg cathode with a resistor and cap.

I have to admit that the "something special" that a SET provides, is nice, and given the right speaker and more importantly music, can be magic, but the only way I could live with it (when I ...

Re: Converting EL38 amp to 300b Amp

Just because Sukuma went on about something special in transformers everywhere was great for the sound. Not true if you cant afford the transformers he bought.

There is a presupposition in that, that he was right about his original assertion. Maybe the "something special", was a fiction, or only ...

Re: Nothing In Particular

I seem to remember the BBC changed their codex some time ago and that broke older LMS plugins.

Re: Nothing In Particular

Seems to be working a treat. Yay Open Source, great to see LMS being maintained and updated.

Agree 100%.

Has it got any new features that made you update?

Not that I noticed, but it was there after Andrew mentioned it, so I thought I would see how it was. Seems to work fine. SB Touch is ...

Looks like a good way to kill a £650 valve if a £100 valve fails :-)

Re: Nothing In Particular

Is there not a bit of confusion here. From what I can see, its just a change of name.

from https://lyrion.org/

Lyrion Music Server (formerly Logitech Media Server) is open-source server software which controls a wide range of Squeezebox audio players. Lyrion can stream your local music collection ...

Re: Converting EL38 amp to 300b Amp

There is then the question - 'do we think that a capacitor made of copper (or silver) wires plus enamel is a 'good' (objectively and subjectively) capacitor?'
Not touching that one :-)

Re: Converting EL38 amp to 300b Amp

Morgan was saying about bridging transformers with a small cap. The Hammond is bifilar so both windings side by side, surely is equivalent of bridging with a capacitor? But I am prepared to try small caps.

Yep, I have always believed that bifilar is just a way of smuggling a distributed cap ...

Re: Converting EL38 amp to 300b Amp

5/ grid resistance, WE for fixed bias limit is 50kohm. I see diode bias as fixed bias erring on the side of safety. I bet many of you never seen that limitation? Now I see where the figure suggested on a forum for fixed bias GM70 is 50kohm . I would suggest that may be too high.

There are two ...

Well we both know they seem to sound better on breadboards anyway. Not sure when the putting in boxes crept in.

Re: Nothing In Particular

I dont agree with Sowter when you wind a power transformer you choose the core size by the power only half the centre tapped winding is working at a time. So the current through half the winding is taken into account. The core and A which is the core suface area is measured for that duty. Which is ...

Re: Nothing In Particular

So from the link Max gave

FULL WAVE: Iac = Idc

BRIDGE: Iac = Idc x 1.61

So from that I would say that the rating of a transformer rated for full wave should be de-rated by 62% (1 / 1.61 = 0.62 )

Re: Cambridge A1 Mk3 - What to do?

Yes the TT supply. Generally 3886 are better. They are very reliable as long as you drive them with care. I found TDA types would literally go bang.

Re: Cambridge A1 Mk3 - What to do?

Well I can imagine a amp getting upset driving the output tx. It will look like a short at DC and transients could cause back emf problems. I would advise against it. I drive a transformer secondary with a 3886 and had to learn a few tricks to stop it blowing up.
