Re: Phono input capacitance
That's ignoring the effect the cap may have on the generator. It may be the reducing load with frequency is damping the cart at those frequencies.

It does feel (sound) like rather than just removing something, the cap is letting the cart behave ...

Re: Phono input capacitance
Well, caps pass high frequencies. The bigger the cap the lower the frequency where it takes effect. Putting it across the + and - of a cartridge channel, just means that it is shorting high frequencies to ground with a phase shift. The output impedance for "most" DECCA cartridges is 4400 Ohms. 10 ...

Re: Phono input capacitance
Nuts, every browser can Save Page As, or do what Toppsy did. Anyway he was saying he put 10nF on his Decca cartridge to curb the shrill treble artifacts, and thought it may be specific to that one example.
He also said the maths of adding that much capacitance makes no sense. Doesn't go into ...

Graeme, I have just copied the whole text of that Hagerman Technology link using the Ctrl 'c' to highlight it all then posting it into a blank page of MS Word using Ctrl 'v'. It has ...

Bit this is the article that made me try adding capacitance, he talks about it around 2/3rds of the way down the page.

Re: Phono input capacitance
I don't really understand this, but it's becoming apparent that I could do with at least understanding it a little.
Does this link help any? http://www.hagtech.com/loading.html
It will certainly help me understand what should be going on, thanks. I'll read it properly after dinner.
What I ...

Since I've had this decca cart I've been trying to tame an element of its sound by adjusting loading, effective mass, set up etc but nothing was working.

Re: Phono stage loading
Years ago I built a phono and used 2 no. 12 way switches to wire in 12 different load resistors per channel. And yes it did make a surprising difference. If you know the recommended range I'd be inclined to choose a range of values from a bit below to a bit above and try. Going way off will sound ...

Re: Phono stage loading
I have a 50k alps blue. Wondering if I can use that, with 20k in series to give the range of variability I'd like to try with this decca.
I guess I could switch that 20k between being in series or in parallel to give me a suitable range for mc (I use step up transformers with mc)

Using Phono plugs is an option, but I'm probably going to want to try alot of different values.
I'd like to be able to vary it during play too if possible, at least for a few weeks while I get this dialled in.

Skip to the gap in text to avoid the drivel 😂
I eventually bought a new cart. I couldn't decide what to get so I did the least sensible thing and bought a used garrott microscanner decca london.
It's good.

The Benz is one of the few in this price range that aren't really high compliance too, so would suit both my tt/arm set ups.
