I just started watching Babylon Berlin on NOW. In the first episode, there's a needle scratch across a record being played on a gramophone. The sound is totally wrong. It's clearly a thin stylus on vinyl, and you can tell the signal is amplified.
Mr. Idler will be so proud that my first thought was ...

Look after yourself and you know the old expression, while the cat's away...
In this case, the saying would be, "while the man's away, the cat will hide under the bed 24/7." I rarely ever see her when he's not home, unless her food dish is empty or she wants me to run the tap for her. Absurd ...

Alas, I will not be joining you this weekend. A series of minor misfortunes has left me rather demoralised. I decided to stay home so as not to jinx Dave. I hope you all have a great time, and I know you'll be suitably impressed with Dave's work!

Re: I need the use of a good cassette deck -- anyone?
edit: post rummage....it's a Goodmans GSW20, probably not up to what you're after.
Thanks for the offer, Ed, but I think I'm going to hold out for something at least as good as the decks I originally recorded on (which isn't great, but better than Goodmans).
Ive only got a crap marantz twin ...

Not exactly hi-fi, but one of my all-time favourites. Every single track is a gem.

I need the use of a good cassette deck -- anyone?
Yes, yes, I know. But I made a lot of demos (and one tape I sold a few hundred copies of) on cassette back in the 80s, and I'd like to transfer them into digital form before they degrade any further, particularly because a lot of my friends have worn out their copies (!) and are begging for ...

Re: Nothing In Particular
I have known Mr. Rehwinkel since I was 14. I am now 55. The years we spent as (platonic) roommates were some of the best of my life. And this sort of hilarity was pretty much everyday for us.
The stories I could tell, only I think Mr. Idler might prefer I didn't. The stolen 10-foot balloon! The Van ...

Re: The Newton 300B
Mr. Idler posted photos of these on Facebook and one of my Texas friends asked for the schematics and wants to build his own now. He's a NASA engineer (he's designed and built stuff that's now flying in space) with his own wood/metal shop, so I expect he's up to the challenge. His wife may not ...

Let me know when there is any actual prediction instead of vague hand waving.
Back in a bit. I have to go launch a DDoS attack.
And you think that’s what he had in mind when he said "in which he predicted that in the future, war would be conducted by wireless"?
Quite possibly. I'm ...

Is that an alternative spelling of "mad as a box of frogs"?
Well, sure, that too, but I'm guessing you'd be a bit strange too if you could predict the future that accurately!

I see you've even produced a user manual, tucked to the side of the nearest metronome!
Believe it or not, that's actually a bound set of every issue of the daily Los Angeles Tribune newspaper from February 1916. The front page of the first issue has the headline, "ZEPPELIN RAID OVER LONDON ...

Hey Mark, good to see you here! I look forward to seeing your input on the board.
To everyone else, Mark is an old friend of mine -- we met when he engineered my pro demo back in 1990. The Jim Brock and John Sharp recordings he mentioned are well worth seeking out. Here's a sample!
