Re: Nothing In Particular

I'm having a moment and can't convince myself I'm correct. With a traditional centre tapped mains transformer intended for full wave rectification, if the whole of the secondary is used with bridge rectification the current capacity of the secondary should be halved (compared to full wave CT ...

Re: Canbridge A1 Mk3 - What to do?

I'd power the amplifier gently via a Variac and point infra-red camera at various components to see what's getting hot. Of course, you might not have an infra-red camera, but I believe mobile 'phone cameras (which are also CCD) can often do the job. I'm sure you have a Variac.

Re: Gear Box Rantings

By the way, my experience is that Suzuki gear boxes have an agricultural feel whereas Yamaha are much slicker. I've no idea how you could race a GSXR - you'd never be able to get the gear change at the exact time you wanted it. My KTM690 had a false neutral between 5th and 6th and I found it as I ...

Nice. Although I had to look up what a paladin was. Not nearly enough hair for lovelock hairstyle, but I believe beard plus woolly pully is now back in fashion, so I must have been a dedicated leader of fashion a few years ago.

Thanks for that; I'd always wondered about what was different inside a bike's gear box to produce sequential shifts.

Re: It's time to go full Karna Kay

With a 1:1 transformer, you can also do the GEC trick of adding coupling capacitors from input to output. Why bother? Because it can tame the transformer's HF resonance but you still have the advantage of large voltage swing.

Re: 4 watt 211 Amplifier into GM70 Amplifier

I'm afraid I concur; going into A2 means grid current and even if you had zero source resistance, the grid is now acting as an anode so it has internal resistance and that means the grid current develops a series distortion voltage. Expect lots of high order harmonics the moment grid current appears ...

Re: Slow Mo MoFo

I had read Rod Elliott’s article on heatsinking transistors years ago but had obviously forgot about some of his findings.

I've just looked up Rod Elliott's page on using heatsinks; it's excellent. Well worth a serious read, especially the bits about minimising thermal resistance from the device ...

Re: Slow Mo MoFo

Well done; thermal resistance between the device and heat sink is important and needs to be minimised. Clamps that go over the device and apply force above the silicon die will be much better than a single offset screw. Your measurements of insulating layer thickness are interesting. You can't do it ...

Re: Slow Mo MoFo

We're coming up to that time of year when ready-made test enclosures are readily available from supermarkets; just remove shortbread. They have nice continuous seams and lids with reasonably deep flanges (needed for screening). I used to put out an email in December at work asking that any unneeded ...

They don't stick. There's a bang when they hit the bend where the pipe goes into the whizzy circulating spinny bit, but that's all.

Yes, it is expensive, but can be found for £50. That paper is very good and has much of what is in the book. It will certainly take you most of the way. I'm just a sucker for books.

It really is worth having screened enclosures for experiments, and if they can hold temperature constant, so much the ...
