I'd power the amplifier gently via a Variac and point infra-red camera at various components to see what's getting hot. Of course, you might not have an infra-red camera, but I believe mobile 'phone cameras (which are also CCD) can often do the job. I'm sure you have a Variac.

With a 1:1 transformer, you can also do the GEC trick of adding coupling capacitors from input to output. Why bother? Because it can tame the transformer's HF resonance but you still have the advantage of large voltage swing.

I'm afraid I concur; going into A2 means grid current and even if you had zero source resistance, the grid is now acting as an anode so it has internal resistance and that means the grid current develops a series distortion voltage. Expect lots of high order harmonics the moment grid current appears ...
