Re: Soft start query
No, MOVs are designed for spike suppression so they're designed to run cool whilst absorbing/clipping the energy of occasional spikes. Warming an MOV irreversibly reduces its clipping voltage - it's why EMC tests allow a one minute cooling time between applying each spike and why MOVs eventually fai...

Re: Valve amplifier service
Post #17 said: "What I did notice was the small amount of hum stopped when I put the meter probe on the left channel grid of V2B." That shrieks RF oscillation to me, and RF oscillation can cause hum. I doubt if the phase splitter is oscillating, but the cathode follower in that SRPP is a d...

But stoopid!
Golly! I was only little when I heard that gag on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in. With a young and supposedly dizzy Goldie Hawn.
And the Ikea bowl looks good. No idea if there's an Ikea near us. Thanks for the tip.

I doubt that many people make a push-pull V1505 amplifier! Too hairy. Nice to see you here. I still remember the clip-lead amplifier... Re: Salad Bowl Speakers
What a good idea. I have always kept an eye on the kitchen section for useful boxes etc - I bought a rather nice cork container a while ago from Sainsburys that may one day become the insulation for a temperature-sensitive lab measurement. I must see if there's anything at Wilko that I can subvert. ...

Re: Soft start query
NTC stands for Negative Temperature Coefficient. It's a resistor that when it gets hot has much lower resistance than cold. And the key word is hot. NTCs run hot. Which is not good for surrounding components. That's why they're used to take something up to almost working voltage, then are often bypa...

Re: A little light humour
Our smaller cat wouldn't bother with Poland - she'd go straight to Russia. And win. In the last few months, she has learned how to duff up pigeons. I have twice found a pigeon in the kitchen (alive, and not wanting to be rescued). But this is a humour thread. On Monday, older cat and I went down to ...

Four-wire capacitors
As some of you know, I favour four-wire polypropylene capacitors for HT supplies because the four-wire connection moves lead inductance to a position where it doesn't degrade high frequency filtering. Plus, any plastic capacitor has much lower ESR than an electrolytic capacitor. The combination of l...

Re: Internal Tonearm wire recommendations
I'm afraid that if you claim I've made seven errors but fail to specify them, thereby denying the right to respond, then that's discourteous because it makes the assumption that all your bones of contention are correct. And they may not be.

Re: Internal Tonearm wire recommendations
That certainly is being pedantic, but I take your point. Yes, if you use MC then putting the input stage further away can reduce hum from the motor, but you need twisted pair and (ideally) a transformer-balanced input to avoid substituting cable hum.

Re: Internal Tonearm wire recommendations
All this talk of types of wire and nothing about how it should be used? It's a horrible fiddly job, but this is how I make it easier. I do the job once or thrice a decade, and that's still too often. The internal wire has two jobs. It must get the signal from cartridge to arm base without picking up...

Re: Where Did You Start?
It was indeed frugal; paper round was about £3 a week, so £14 for the 301 was a lot of money. In front are the beginnings of the next arm. Just visible is Quad II. Die-cast box was RIAA stage (mono) that went through lots of iterations. Solder splashes were because I couldn't afford a solder sucker,...

So did the repair work? I have a CXC (works fine at the moment) but it would be nice to lay in a spare laser just in case.

Re: Where Did You Start?
Apologies for the appalling technical quality, but here's the original honey-damped unipivot and 301 on lovingly crafted plinth. I was fourteen at the time.
