Wall Shelf Prob

I've just bought a new plinth for my 401, and it wont fit on my Sound Organisation wall shelf because the shelf part is too small. I need something 495mm x 470mm - hopefully I can just to rest it on the wallshelf frame, rather than inside like the current shelf.
Can anyone recommend something that ...

Just an update on this.
I picked up another 401, and tried the platter off that on my current TT. There are no thumps at all, so it's definitely the 'dings' in my original platter that are the culprit. One avenue I had been considering was to fit a rubber seal between the thrust bearing plate ...

I had a good look at the Garrard I serviced today. As I suspected, there is no adjustment that can be made to the height of the idler wheel. The adjustment I think Andrew refers to is for alignment of the stepped motor spindle drive wheel which has 3 grub screws on a 401 and 4 on a 301.

Applied the Araldite last night, and took the emery cloth block to the platter this afternoon. I got the surface as smooth as possible, and tried it out. It is a lot better - the thump is still there, much reduced so a lot more tolerable. The good news is that Greg's suggestion was successful - I ...

Thanks for the tips guys - I'll pick up some Araldite & emery paper at the weekend & have a go.
Thanks, Gary

I finally got around to detailed investigation into this issue. I fitted a new plinth to the deck, and tried it out with the only record to hand - a 7" single. Lo & behold, no thump! I thought the change of plinth had cured it, but the first LP I tried, the thump was back. This indicated that there ...

Thin Lizzy got a lot of flak for this apparent tweaking. The word was, what they actually did was to record the direct live feeds to the mixing desk at the venues to multitrack tape and used the usual mics to pick up the PA to get the hall ambience and the audience reaction.

Steve

Yep, ties in ...

Thin Lizzy

Live and Dangerous

I was there!

I'm somewhere in the audience doing the call/response bit on Baby Drives Me Crazy.

A stunning record, even though it was tweaked up in the studio.

Steve

Tweaked up in the studio? From what I understand, the only parts which weren't changed were the ...

Greg/Pre65, thanks for the suggestions. I will remove the spindle bearing from the deck at the weekend, and try the platter on the spindle when removed. That should indictate whether or not the issue is the thrust bearing thickness. If not, then I will reassemble with a washer on each mounting screw ...

I tried a few things over the weekend - putting white electrical tape on the inside & bottom of the platter to see if it would catch on anything. Nothing, and there aren't any marks on the deck to show if the platter is scraping. It's a bit annoying, as the deck is sounding brilliant, much better ...

No Offense taken Philip, and a good point too.

Different turntables of the same model can have slight variations and as Philip suggests you may want to check that the platter is indeed high enough.

Gary, can you explaine the dings in the platter a bit more clearly, maybe a picture. If you can't ...

Darren, I will post some photos later. With regard to the platter height, how do I check it is correct?

What about spinning the platter by hand ?

Unplug the power and use the on switch a bit to disengage the platter brake and see if it makes the thump when the idler is not rubbing on the platter.

Marcus, the thump before was just audible if I listened close to the deck. I did what you suggested ...

Hi Gary.

Remove the platter and check the inside rim for any kind of damage, including fractures, corrosion, dirt, flat-spots or eccentricity. Could the platter have been dropped? Has it done this since you had it, or is it a recent occurrence? Could the brake be catching on something maybe?

Is ...
