Re: Refurbishing a Thorens TD 150

No experience of them obviously, but I've seen positive comments about replacing the motor with a DC type - Origin Live sell a kit but the motor is around £100 and the electronics to power it are are lest 2-3 times as much, and upwards...

Re: Refurbishing a Thorens TD 150

My TD150 motor doesn't have an external thrust pad, yet the end of the shaft is a polished dome... Some of the pictures on the ebay listing appear to show a ball bearing that pushes up against the motor shaft but I can't see how you could reliably align it with something you glue on by hand. I was ...

Re: Refurbishing a Thorens TD 150

Had to have a look with the armboard and arm temporarily in place. Umming and aahing about whether to add some carbon fibre sheet to the armboard - I've just about got enough with the same orientation of the weave.

Re: Refurbishing a Thorens TD 150

That motor appears to be missing its thrust pad, should be a round grey plastic cap under the motor spindle, i cant remember if the early ones had one though so it might be ok I don't think it's missing anything, Ant, but a knocking from the motor seems to be an issue and there are after-market sol...

Re: Refurbishing a Thorens TD 150

I'll be installing a carbon-tubed Pro-ject tonearm that I acquired for a good price.

Nigel (Vinylspinner) of this parish has sent a Goldring G800 cartridge with an elliptical after-market stylus to partner with the tonearm.

Refurbishing a Thorens TD 150

As I mentioned in the thread about getting my niece started with a decent vinyl replay system, I'm already working on an upgrade to the Dual 505-2 through my acquisition of a Thorens TD 150, circa 1970 - I managed to get a tidy example for £75 on ebay. I started by completely stripping it down, and,...

Fair enough, but it does get a lot of positive commentary.

Cheers Phil.

I'm not familiar with the drive units but I did wonder about the viability of the 18in bass units and the 8in Viscounts as an open baffle. I'm going to resist going beyond wondering though.

You're making some very generous offers there Chris, very good of you.

Almost tempted by the 18in drivers but then I reminded myself of all the other projects I already have...
