#1 Change of direction.

Post by al newall »

Ok, so i've got a decent Lenco 75, thanks to Lee.

Thought i'd have a look at Lenco lovers forum, in search of inspiration. Seems to have gone, at least it's not there now.

While i'm waiting for it to return.

Got a few little jobs to do on the deck/plinth and i'll have to make an arm of some sort, so expect some fairly basic questions in the next few weeks.

Also got to think about a MM phono stage. Need your experience here to find or build something better, than the £12 generic black box that i have to get me going. Still needs to be cheap though.
Realistically Moving Coil carts are out of the question at the moment, and i want to start at the bottom and work up anyway.
High output MC is a possibility in the future, so a phono stage with some decent gain seems a good idea to me.
The low output of these phono amp things worries me a bit, when i'm used to CD.
Much to learn there is.

That reminds me. You can have the Goldring G800 for now Al. Its a reliable old MM that will get you going for no outlay. I will try and get it in the post to you before the end of the week.

You are now on the slippery slope for sure......

Al, would you like a brand new stylus for your G800?

I've got a few....

F.O.C natch. PM me your address.

Congrats on taking the Lenco Challenge. They're easy to work on and after a few years of fettling mine I'm still gobsmacked at what it can do.

If you can find an old metal Decca Unipivot arm grab it, they're magic in combination with the '75. The plastic one are very fragile, I've got both. They turn up from time to time but tend to get snapped up quick as they're a near (bit of hole drilling) drop-in replacement for the Lenco arm.

and bung it in a big heavy plinth too while you're at it, ditch all the boingy suspension and supe-up the bearing with 'Joels bearing kit' and the jobs a good 'un :)

Hi Al-some older "sand" amps had a half decent phono, and if it has pre outs (as some do) that would get you going.

Sad news... I think Lenco Lovers has gone belly up... Something to do with a falling out between the moderators so I hear.

All is not lost though...

A new site is here if anyone is interested...

Thanks for the replies and offers chaps. While i consider the options....

Whats the deal with CLD plinths, as usual there seems to be some disagreement online about the best way of doing things.
As this is the biggest job, i'd like to get it somewhere near right first time.

Is there an ideal number of layers?

Does it matter what they are?

What to join em with?

Is Birch ply really necessary(I've seen a pic of a nice BP plinth, with obvious voids in the plies.). Some of the ordinary ply looks ok.

Do i need a template, if i already have a Lenco plinth?

the template gives the cutouts for the lower layers allowing the complete plinth to be near enough solid, first layer is the same as the mounting points, 2nd down only clears the motor and idler, 3rd the bottom of the motor and idler then last is just clears the bearing. doesnt matter about the voids if you dont mind seeing them as supposedly it defeats the object of the layers if you put a surround on it. does it? dunno i never tried. one thing to look at is to use some 6mm perspex between the layers, i found that a combination of ply and perspex was really good. cost about a tenner for a 2x4 sheet. or it did 3 years ago. probably extortionate now!

Cressy.

Ta for the offer of an arm, but i've got an idea for building something similar to one i made years ago.

Perspex layers sound good. How did you bond them to the ply?

PM sent re. templates.

Cheers.
