Yes, you are two systems behind, but don’t worry about that, it’s a good system.
The person you are getting the computer from needs to sign the machine out of the iTunes store etc and reinstall the OS, before giving you the machine. The link below tells them what to do. You will run into insurmountable problems if they have not done this.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065
When you set up the machine yourself you will be asked to create an Apple ID *****@icloud.com and choose a password. This gives you an email address and a way to sign into iTunes, App Store, iMessage, iCloud storage etc. You can enable two-factor authentication by giving Apple your mobile number. But it’ll take you through all that when you are setting up. It’s easier for you to follow the instructions as they come up rather than me trying to explain things.

This link shows which os it will be able to update itsself to once its squared itsself away, but yes, make sure the seller/giver signs out of everything and reinstalls before you get it otherwise its a brick because of the linked apple id

Thanks Ant, now it begins to get complicated. I will engage the chum in detailed conversation tomorrow but I admit, I have what DtB described as hot sweaty trousers or something!

Ignore this if it makes things more confusing.....
iPads run iPodOs (or something) which is a different OS to MacOs. But it is easy to set things up so that photos, music etc are all seamlessly integrated across both devices. Some apps are common (like Safari browser) but they are actually different software.
Mac mini is also a nice box if you have any requirement for a 'server' to stick in a cupboard and just leave running.
If you wanted to give Roon a trial, then a Mac Mini makes a nice Roon Core.

Just after 1pm we heard a noise outside, but were unable to decide what it might have been.
Just found out it was a sonic boom.
