Freezing today in More Park in Maidstone.
That's where our ride started - in thick freezing fog...
Workshop has no heating yet. Can't wait...
Got to make a new cellar door - two parts, like a stable door...

Funny you should say that.. I have intention to venture out on the bike tomorrow if it is dry as suggested.
To be fair the snow is a few miles out of town here.
However the neighbours have just come back from Oswestry where there was snow at low level.

I walked into town earlier and, as I often do, popped into the local Oxfam store to see what CDs they have on their shelves - they have quite a nice little music section upstairs.
Anyway, there were a couple of guys there with what nust have been several hundred LPs on the floor, which they were going through, removing the sleeves, tearing them up and chucking them in a bin bag, the actual records were just tossed into into a container. I could see that many of the LPs were on good quality labels/well known performers and pieces. When I asked what they were doing they said it was surplus stock that was being disposed of. When I persisted a little they told me that a lot of LPs are disposed of if they don't sell after a few weeks so that there is stock churn and to keep their prices up. Apparently the sleeves go into the paper/card recycling and the LPs to landfill.
With an eye to a potential turntable build I asked if I could take a small selection from the pile for a 50p each donation; A resounding no!
I wasn't impressed on several fronts, told them so and left.
It's Oxfam policy and practice apparently.

Stop donating LP's to Oxfam then, that's disgraceful.
They overprice their stock as well, any that have any value.

For the past couple of weeks or so I've been following this ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeJgozB ... b&index=84
Workshopvlog ('vlog' = video log)
Two Dutch guys are restoring a Chinese copy (so they say!) of a Russian T55 tank. Apparently there are a few around to be picked up for rebuilding.
This playlist is subtitled to English (as opposed to other playlists), and you need to start at the bottom and go up to stay in chronological order.
It's basically watching guys at work, but quite engrossing.

When I made the PCL86 amp a year ago (yes really!), I got two used valves for it, a Seimens and a Tungsram. (Actually I bought 3, but the triode of one wasn't working.) Shortly after I also got more modern Mazda ones as spares. 4 as it happened, just as well.
Decided to try them out today for the first time. One channel completely dead (well, very very very VERY quiet). Put another of the Mazda's (so now only 1 left in its box).
Hmmm! I don't like 'em, they're giving me "transistor ear", even with the treble turned down a fair bit on the iTunes equaiiser. Even with treble reduction they're scratchy and nasty.
Waiting for them to cool down then I will put the old ones back in.

Err, that sort of proves that whatever it is you don't like, its not transistor ear.transistor ear

I have used that phrase myself on occasions, and it's usually transistor amps that made me.

That's where I got it from! It's more of an idiom describing an effect, not necessarily accurate.

That's all right thennot necessarily accurate.

#10785 Re: Nothing In Particular
what effect is it describing, or more to the point what you think it's describing......
I'm at pains to understand using an expression if you know it's not accurate........
on second thoughts I'm just curious, not 'at pains'..
